REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE WITH A MAJOR IN CHEMISTRY

OPTION I: 36 semester hours as described below.  This option is recommended for students planning to attend graduate school in chemistry or those going directly into employment as an industrial chemist.

  • CHEM 432 Physical Chemistry, II
  • CHEM 412 Laboratory for Physical Chemistry II
  • CHEM 434 Inorganic Chemistry
  • CHEM 490 Senior Studies, Capstone in Chemistry (2 hours required)

Students choosing Option I are strongly encouraged to take other advanced courses, especially Instrumental Analysis.  Other Selected Topics courses include Biochemistry, and special topics such as those listed in the course description of CHEM 491.

OPTION II: 35 semester hours as described below.  This option is recommended for students entering a “blended” area such as pre-professional medically related areas (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, etc.), chemistry/business, and chemistry/biology

In addition to these course requirements, thirty-six hours of professional education courses are required as defined by the Education Department.

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF ARTSincludes the requirements for the B.S. in Chemistry under any of the options above plus a foreign language through the intermediate level.

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN CHEMISTRY LEADING TO SECONDARY CERTIFICATION – 36 HOURS REQUIRED

  • CHEM 142 General Chemistry I 4 hours
  • CHEM 211 Chemistry Lab II 1 hour
  • CHEM 242 General Chemistry II 4 hours
  • CHEM 331 Organic Chemistry 3 hours
  • CHEM 311 Organic Chemistry Lab 1 hour
  • CHEM 336 Analytical Chemistry 3 hours
  • CHEM 328 Analytical Chemistry Lab 2 hours
  • CHEM 345 Survey of Physical Chemistry 4 hours
  • CHEM 434 Inorganic Chemistry 3 hours
  • CHEM 490 Senior Studies Capstone in Chemistry (2 hours required)
  • CHEM 491 Electives 8 hours

Plus 36 hours of professional education courses

REQUIREMENTS FOR PRE-PROFESSIONAL: MEDICINE, DENTISTRY, OPTOMETRY, PHARMACY, PRE-NURSING AND OTHER MEDICALLY RELATED FIELDS

Appropriate curriculum provided by pre-professional advisor for specific fields. All prerequisites must be passed with a minimum grade of C.
