The purpose of the undergraduate education department is to provide a program of study leading to a bachelor’s degree and a teaching credential for the state of Kentucky. Students in the program will be required to meet the Kentucky New Teacher Standards, be familiar with the Core Content Section of the Kentucky Education Reform Act, identified teacher dispositions, and the department’s motto, Reflective Constructors of Quality Learning Experiences.
All candidates for graduation with a bachelor’s degree from the University of the Cumberlands will be familiar the mission statement of the college which stresses a broad based liberal arts education enriched with Christian values. All prospective teachers must also become familiar with the Kentucky School Personnel Code of Ethics and sign a statement of commitment to these standards.
University of the Cumberlands is dedicated to providing the best possible training of future teachers by offering a curriculum that combines theory with practical experience within the framework of a liberal arts program. By working in concert with the other departments across campus, members of the Department of Education help students design the course of study best suited to his or her interests and talents.
The University’s teacher education program is considered one of the best programs in the state of Kentucky and the Southeast. Faculty are current with important educational issues by actively participating in professional organizations and serving on a variety of advisory boards and councils. Each professor acts as a mentor, guiding students through experiences that will help show them the realities of a career in the classroom. Through observation, field experience and student teaching, students are able to learn exactly what is expected of them as a practicing teacher.
Upon completion the student receives, in addition to the Bachelors Degree, certification to teach in the area they have selected. Each student will work with a certification specialist to make sure the courses they take will be counted toward their certification. All 50 states and the District of Columbia require public school teachers to hold some sort of certification or licensure as it is called in some states. Specific certifications are listed in this website.
