COMMENTS FROM THE EDITOR
Upsilon-Upsilon has a rich history in the annals of Phi Alpha Theta. It was chartered in 1974 as the 500th chapter. Beginning with the 1977-78 academic year, the chapter has either won outright or been named co-winner of the Best Chapter Award in Division I (up to 2500 students) twelve of the last thirteen years. What the future may bring, no one really knows. But the Department and the student members of Upsilon-Upsilon are dedicated to maintaining the tradition of the chapter.
The selection process for this year's volume was again a difficult one for our Board of Advisors. Each member of the Board read every manuscript before the final selections were made. The board and the editor wish to thank each person who submitted a paper. We realize that it required an extra effort on the part of each individual to take the time to do so in the midst of all of their other activities. You are to be commended for your effort.
As editor, I would like to express my thanks to the Board of Advisors. They had the task of making the final selections. It took a great deal of effort and time in a busy semesterespecially to keep the time schedule that was necessary. A special word of thanks is offered to Dr. Bruce Hicks who was the chairman of this year's board.
If you have any comments on the chapter, the Department, or on this publication, please direct them to the editor in care of Cumberland College, Williamsburg, KY 40769-7657.

COMMENTS FROM THE PRESIDENT
The completion of Cumberland College's recent Centennial celebration brought many moments of pride for both former and current students. Indeed, April 18, 1990 was a historic day at Cumberland College. The thirty-ninth President of the United States, Jimmy Carter, came to deliver the dedication address of the new O. Wayne Rollins Convocation/Physical Education complex. This new facility includes a 1670 seat gymnasium, classrooms, a swimming pool, along with several other features. The structure is magnificent and so was the day.
In the summer of 1989 the first edition of The Upsilonian was published. Upsilon-Upsilon looks forward to this second edition and breaking more new ground for our award winning chapter. While we keep our traditional events such as the lecture series, our booksales, and participating in national and regional conventions, we are preparing to launch new projects such as History Day on campus. We will continue to always strive to better our chapter, department and campus.
Helping us to enjoy success at the local and national level there are many people who contribute. I want to recognize and thank the faculty and administration of Cumberland College, especially those of the History and Political Science Department; to the members of the Upsilon-Upsilon Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta; to all those who submitted papers for publication in the second annual Upsilonian; and especially to Dr. Eric L. Wake, faculty sponsor, and Fay Partin, departmental secretary. Without these two important people, our chapter could not have enjoyed the success we have had and especially without whom there would be no Upsilonian.
