Internships

The experiential learning gained through internships is an integral part of a liberal education, and University of the Cumberlands is dedicated to the goal of making internship opportunities available to any qualified student who is interested.

Most internships offer academic credit, and many are paid positions, but all allow students to directly apply their classroom learning and to further develop the critical thinking skills necessary in the professional world.

At UC, the Departments of Education and Social Work require students to complete field experience prior to certification. The Departments of Business and Computer Information Systems have a long-standing relationship with a high-profile corporation in the South, and regularly cultivate new opportunities for students with regional businesses. The Department of Health, Movement, and Leisure Studies frequently places interns with local health and service organizations, and students in the Departments of Psychology, Biology, and Chemistry often spend all or part of their summers in field research. In recent years, the Department of Communication Arts has placed several students in internships with radio and television stations in Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana.

A high percentage of internships arranged through University of the Cumberlands result in job offers from the sponsoring school, business, or organization. Whether the student accepts the offer or declines it in order to further his or her education at the graduate level, there is no question that successful participation in an internship boosts a student’s early career marketability.
