University of the Cumberlands
Department of Mathematics and Physics

The Department of Mathematics and Physics at University of the Cumberlands offers a wide range of courses that can be tailored into programs that address students’ special needs and interests, whether their goals are to enter graduate school or to move directly into a career. The faculty includes specialists in graph theory, number theory, applied and theoretical physics, combinatorics, and mathematics education.

Faculty stay closely involved not only with majors but also with all students interested in mathematics and physics through the activities of the Mathematics and Physics Club. Each year, the club organizes lectures, films, parties, and picnics.

The department also sponsors chapters of Kappa Mu Epsilon and Sigma Pi Sigma, the mathematics and physics honor societies, and each spring hosts the High School Mathematics Contest to encourage students of area high schools to develop their talent in math through individual and team competitions.

What the graduates of this department are doing is a testament to the flexibility of a degree in mathematics or physics. Some are pursuing masters and doctoral degrees at institutions such as the University of Alabama, the University of Tennessee, and Vanderbilt University, while others are working in computer applications and software development, pharmaceutical development, education, telecommunications, and technical design.
