Brian Livingston (physics/math majors, '04) was recently promoted
to First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. Congratulations! Currently
he is doing three months of training in San Antonio, Texas to be
a Bioenvironmental Engineer. He has received orders to move to Patrick
Air Force Base near Orlando, Florida. In 2007, he completed a Masters
of Science in Public Health with an emphasis in Health Physics at
the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Maryland.
His thesis topic was about using gross alpha/beta data from soil
to perform preliminary base assessments.

in analytical chemistry at the University of Arizona in 2005. She

Tony Laschon (math major, '03) married Mandy Lundberg on July
14, 2007, in Richmond, VA. Congratulations! He started classes in
Spring 2007 at Virginia Commonwealth University to pursue a bachelors

to the Math/Physics professors at Cumberlands for being so awesome

Dodridge (math minor, May '99) serves as Associate Pastor at Old
Town Hill Southern Baptist Church in Muncie, Indiana. He and his
wife Sara (Beaver) Dodridge (attended '97-'99) have "two beautiful
children" Garrett (age 4) and Gabby (age 2). He also works
with Baptist Campus Ministries (BSU) at Ball State University. Previously

physics minor, May '99) and her husband Keith Hamm ('01) are the
proud parents of Nolan Thompson Hamm, born September 7, 2007. He

She writes, "We've been on campus recently and are very impressed
with all of the changes that are taking place, and we're excited

(math minor, May '98) is a physician at Meadowview Lane Professional
Center in Kingsport, TN. He completed medical school at Wright State
University. He writes that Cumberland College "prepared me

Eric Alan Thornsbury (physics & math majors '96) and his
wife, Mari Beth (Arthur) Thornsbury ('96) are the proud parents
of Elijah Alexander, born on August 22, 2007. Congratulations! Elijah
joins his brother Jacob Nicholas, age 7, and sisters Grace Annette,
age 4, and Kaitlin, age two and a half. Eric, Mari Beth, and family
currently live in the Philadelphia area. Eric works as a consultant
in Probabilistic Risk Assessment at Erin Engineering in West Chester,
Pennsylvania. The University of Maryland continues to receive support
from Eric as this perpetual student works on a Ph.D. in Reliability

will finish a Masters in Biostats in December 2007. He
is on a three-year subspecialty fellowship in Female Pelvic Reconstructive
Surgery and Urogynecology in Alabama. In April 2006, he went on
a missions trip to Masaka, Uganda, to repair injuries from childbirth.

staff scientist in the Environmental Sciences Division at the Oak
Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. He is currently in
the Atmospheric and Aerosol Sciences group where they study the

as the emissions from jet aircraft. He has "very fond memories

Azmy Ackleh (math major '88)
is principal investigator on a NSF grant for research by and training
of undergraduate students in mathematics and biology and a grant
from the US Department of Interior for modeling the population dynamics
of nutria. He is also a co-investigator on a NIH grant on ecological
modeling of college drinking. In 2007, he received the Distinguished
Professor Award at the University
of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he serves as Professor
of Mathematics and SLEMCO/BORSF Endowed Professor in General Studies.
He and his wife Howayda (Muais) Ackleh have a son Aseal Azmy, age
12, and a daughter Wedad Amy, age 9. New

Kathy (Taylor) Rush (math major '86) teaches
on-line math courses for JCPSeSchool through Jefferson County High
School in Kentucky. She is now focusing on middle school math, but
she wrote previously geometry business math courses. She lives in
Shepardsville, Kentucky, with her husband Jerry and children Bryce
Taylor, an Eagle Scout, age 16, and Emily Rebecca, a Louisville
Youth Orchestra violinist, age 12.

Ricky Paul Rains (math major '85) was inducted into the Williamsburg
High School Hall of Fame in 2006. Congratulations! He was recognized
for his ability to turn a losing high school football team into
a state contender in a few years. He has achieved this at four different
high schools in Kentucky. He was also recognized for his work with
the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He currently teaches and coaches
football at Lexington Christian Academy in Kentucky.

as Interim Principal at Barbourville High School during Fall 2002.
He retired after 35 years of service in the public schools in Knox
County and Barbourville districts. The last seven years he

is a professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at
Eastern Kentucky University.

retiring from teaching. He also enjoys his four grandchildren.

as a consultant in mathematics and computer science. He retired
from Martin Marietta Energy Systems in 1995 after 36 years of service.

Congratulations! He retired as the Vice President of Academic Affairs

Kenneth Roger Foster (math major ' 61) serves Executive
Vice President of Coal Creek Mining and Manufacturing Company in
Tennessee.

Edgar Franklin Jones (math major '61) is retired, but he teaches
part-time at a community college in Ohio.

Phil Brashear (math '60) works for Electronic
Data Systems (EDS) Corporation in Dayton, Ohio, where he currently
focuses on statistical process performance (his mathematics training
has become very important again). After completing junior college
at Cumberland, he graduated from University of Kentucky with a secondary
teaching certificate in math, then earned a master's in math from
Northwestern University and completed the coursework and orals for
the Ph.D. in math from the University of Georgia. He taught at Eastern
Kentucky University for 20 years, and finished there as Associate
Professor of Computer Science. Since 1985, he has worked for three
US Government contractors, doing software development, compiler
testing, and quality assurance. New

Engineering at Kettering University in Michigan. New

He resides in Las Vegas, NV.

Doris Jean Spafford ('50) passed away on August 22, 2000, at
her home in Florida. She was a mere 19 7/8 years old, or so
she always told her students. Miss Spafford spent many years
teaching junior high mathematics in Chicago (IL) and Williamsburg
(KY). She was very active in the Cumberland College
Alumni Association. In lieu of flowers, her sisters asked
for memorial gifts to Cumberland College for the Doris Jean Spafford
Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund. We remember the Spafford
family in our thoughts and prayers.

Eugene M. West ('46) passed away on Thursday,
November 10, 2005, in Lexington, Kentucky. Our prayers are with
the West family. He received the honorary Doctor of Laws degree
from Cumberland College on September 25, 2000. Dr. West served
as president of Eugene M. West and Associates -- Consulting Engineers,
based in Lexington. He was a Registered Civil Engineer and
a Registered Land Surveyor. He had three daughters and eight
grandchildren.

Vivian (McClure) Johnston ('33) passed away in 1998. With sadness,
we note that her husband John Johnston passed away on April 8, 2001,
and was buried beside Vivian at Cumberland Gap, Tennessee. Vivian
taught math in Tennessee and New York until the end of World War
II. She and her husband raised their family in New Jersey, and regularly
attended reunions at Cumberland. In her honor, the family has established
a scholarship fund at Cumberland College.
