Mathematics Requirements

 

*REQUIREMENTS FOR A MAJOR IN MATHEMATICS*

A minimum of forty-one semester hours is required for a major in mathematics. Of these, thirty-three hours shall be in mathematics and eight hours in physics as follows:

Calculus 12 hours MATH 140, MATH 240, MATH 241
Differential Equations 3 hours MATH 430
Abstract Algebra 3 hours MATH 431
Linear Algebra 3 hours MATH 432
Discrete Mathematics 3 hours MATH 433
Real Analysis I  3 hours MATH 436
mathematics electives 6 hours from: MATH 331 or above (except MATH 332 and 333).

Physics I, II 8 hours PHYS 241, PHYS 242

The preceding requirements are for the Bachelor of Science with a major in mathematics. For the Bachelor of Arts with a major in mathematics, 12 semester hours of the same modern foreign language is required in addition to requirements listed above.


*REQUIREMENTS FOR A MINOR IN MATHEMATICS*

A minimum of twenty-one hours in mathematics is required for a minor in mathematics as follows:

Calculus 12 hours MATH 140, MATH 240, MATH 241
mathematics electives 9 hours from: MATH 331 or above (except MATH 332 and 333).

*TEACHER CERTIFICATION IN MATHEMATICS (Secondary)*

A Mathematics Major with College Geometry and Statistics as the two mathematics electives are required. The student must also complete the professional education requirements as outlined in the Teacher Education Programs of University of the Cumberlands Handbook. A minimum of forty-one semester hours is required in mathematics and physics. Of these, thirty-three hours shall be in mathematics and eight hours in physics as follows: 

Calculus 12 hours MATH 140, MATH 240, MATH 241
College Geometry 3 hours MATH 331 
Statistics 3 hours: MATH 335 or MATH 435

Differential Equations 3 hours MATH 430
Abstract Algebra 3 hours MATH 431
Linear Algebra 3 hours MATH 432
Discrete Mathematics 3 hours MATH 433
Real Analysis I  3 hours MATH 436

Physics I, II 8 hours PHYS 241, PHYS 242

Highly recommended 
Numerical Techniques (Graphing Calculator) 1 hour MATH 211 
additional upper division mathematics courses as individual programs allow
