KAPPA MU EPSILON
(Mathematics Honor Society)

Kappa Mu Epsilon is a national mathematics honor society for students of mathematics. It is intended to develop an appreciation of the power and beauty possessed by mathematics and to provide a society for the recognition of outstanding achievement in the study of mathematics at the undergraduate level. The Kentucky Beta Chapter, founded at Cumberland College (now the University of the Cumberlands) in 1993, was the second chapter in the commonwealth.

Requirements for membership are completion of three college mathematics courses including one semester of calculus, a B average or better in all mathematics courses, a ranking in the upper 35% of your class, and completion of three semesters of college courses. Transfer students must have completed at least one semester at the University of the Cumberlands.

*Activities during 2007 *

For pictures of many of these recent activities, continue to the scrapbook.

On February 23, 2007, the Kentucky Beta chapter held an initiation and a joint banquet with Sigma Pi Sigma, physics honor society, at the Cumberland Inn. Kappa Mu Epsilon inducted thirteen new student members at the banquet, presided over by outgoing president, Sarah Strunk. As an additional feature, senior awards were given by the department at the banquet. One additional member was inducted later in the semester.

On March 28, the chapter helped to host Ms. Pam Armentrout from University of Tennessee graduate school. Jointly with the Mathematics and Physics Club, the Kentucky Beta Chapter hosted Dr. Carroll Wells from David Lipscomb University on April 12. He spoke about "Euler – After 300 Years We Still Can’t." On April 13, members also assisted in hosting a regional high school math contest, held annually at the University of the Cumberlands. On April 26, the entire department, including the Math and Physics Club, Sigma Pi Sigma (Physics Honors Society), and the Kentucky Beta Chapter, held a pizza party to celebrate the end of the semester.

On September 4, the Kentucky Beta chapter helped to host an ice cream party for the freshmen math and physics majors. Along with the Mathematics and Physics Club and Sigma Pi Sigma, the chapter had a picnic at Briar Creek Park on October 11. On December 7, the entire department, including the Math and Physics Club, the Kentucky Beta chapter, and Sigma Pi Sigma had a Christmas party with about 27 people in attendance.
