University of the Cumberlands
Regional High School Mathematics Contest

Dear High School Teacher:

The University of the Cumberlands Department of Mathematics and Physics invites you and your students to our annual high school mathematics contest on Wednesday, April 16, 2008. The contest comprises individual written examinations in five subjects - Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Precalculus, and Calculus - as well as a cooperative group examination for teams.

Each high school may enter up to two students in each subject and one four-student team in the cooperative group examination. Cumberland will award trophies, plaques, or certificates to recognize top individuals, teams, and high schools in a ceremony on the afternoon of the contest. Following this ceremony we hope to hold drawings for prizes donated by local merchants.

While your students compete, we invite you to enjoy refreshments and the company of mathematics teachers from other high schools. We have arranged for Dr. Carroll Wells of David Lipscomb University to return with another informative and entertaining workshop on creative and engaging ideas for presenting mathematics in your own classroom. If you wish to count this workshop for two hours of inservice credit, we will provide you with a form verifying your participation.

For further information and pre-registration instructions, please call me, Reid Davis, at (606) 539-4348 or send me e-mail at rdavis@ucumberlands.edu.

All pre-registration forms and fees ($1.00 per student) are due by Wednesday, April 2, 2008.

We look forward to seeing you and your students on Wednesday, April 16, 2008.

Sincerely,

Reid Davis, Associate Professor
