Dr. Robert Dunston, Ph. D.
Professor of Religion & Department Chair
Before turning his focus to biblical studies, Dr. Bob Dunston earned his first advanced degree in mathematics, completing a B.S. at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1971. In 1977, he earned an M.Div. in Biblical Studies from the Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, followed in 1979 by a Th.M. in Biblical Studies from the Union Theological Seminary in Virginia, and a Ph.D. in Old Testament Studies from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1983. Since joining the faculty of Cumberland College in 1983, Dr. Dunston has been repeatedly honored for excellence in teaching. The Student Government Association has selected him three times as Honored Professor: in 1984, 1990, and 1997. In 1989, he received the Cumberland College Award for Excellence in Teaching, and he was presented with the J.B. Fuqua Award in 1996, 1998, and 2000. In 1997, Theta Alpha Kappa, the national religion honor society, recognized him with the Kathleen Connolly-Weinert Leader of the Year Award. Dr. Dunston is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature, the National Association of Baptist Professors of Religion, and the National Association of Professors of Hebrew. He recently received a grant from the Appalachian College Association (ACA) to collaborate with six professors from four ACA colleges in the development of online resources for biblical Greek and Hebrew.
