I n 1987, Dr. Garland Young became the first full-time faculty member in Philosophy at Cumberland College. During his three years in this capacity, he revised the course offerings and objectives for a minor in philosophy and, through his encouragement, significantly increased the number of students choosing to minor in philosophy. In 1990, he was named Assistant Professor of Religion and since then has focused his teaching on biblical studies, biblical languages, and ethics. In 1992 he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor, and in 1997 to Professor.
Dr. Young earned a B.A. in Religion and Greek from Union University in 1980, followed by an M.Div. from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1983. He completed additional study at the School of Theology at Claremont in California in 1985, after which he earned a Ph.D. in New Testament Studies from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1987.
Dr. Young is the coordinator of the Thomas Staley Christian Lecture Series and has chaired the Convocation Policy Committee since 1996. He has been active in the study, promotion, and instruction of the use of technology in the classroom and authored the department’s first website. He is the co-founder of the Cumberland College Teaching and Learning with Technology Roundtable and has received several grants to develop courses and workshops using technology.
