Intensive English Program
at the University of the Cumberlands

Overview
The Intensive English Program (IEP) at the University of the Cumberlands exists to make it possible for international students with limited English skills to begin the ascent to academic success at the collegiate level. Through the full-time study of English grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking, students gain the knowledge of the English language that is necessary for success in the regular American university classroom. The program is intensive in nature—that is, it provides the student with the opportunity to learn English at an accelerated rate. Students may complete an entire level in just a semester! A student may complete the English study necessary for entry into a regular American college or university by devoting only one year to the Intensive English Program. In addition, students who enter the program at the intermediate or advanced levels may require only one to two semesters of the Intensive English Program before admission to the regular university is granted.
Courses
The Intensive English Program (IEP) at the University of the Cumberlands offers four courses in each of three levels of language study. Courses are offered in (1) grammar, (2) reading and vocabulary, (3) writing, and (4) listening and conversation. Students are placed at a level commensurate with their language ability at the time of entry into the program and have the opportunity to pass on to the next level each term. Each level may be repeated once if needed.
Extracurricular Activities
In addition to sixteen hours of in-class instruction each week, students will also have the opportunity to spend time using interactive media in our language lab, practice spoken English with a conversation partner each week, and attend various International Program and campus-wide functions. Students are encouraged to “learn by doing” and truly take advantage of this unique opportunity for English language learning. We invite you to come learn with us!
