Overview
The Intensive English Program (IEP) provides and opportunity for international students with limited English skills to make a successful transition to English based instruction at the university. The IEP program is intensive in nature. As such, it provides the student with the opportunity to learn English at an accelerated rate. Students who enter the program at the intermediate or advanced levels may require only one to two semesters of courses within the Intensive English Program before admission to the regular university is granted.
Depending on their performance on the English entrance exam, students may only be required to enroll in selected IEP courses necessary to further develop some skill areas while also enrolling in a limited number of courses within the regular academic program.
Courses
The Intensive English Program (IEP) at University of the Cumberlands provides four courses to address different aspects of language study (Grammar, Reading and Vocabulary, Writing, and Listening and Conversation) at three levels of instruction (Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced).Students are placed at a level of instruction equal to their language ability as determined by their performance on an English placement exam at the time of entry into the program. Students have the opportunity to pass on to the next level each term. Each level may be repeated once if needed.
Each class meets for 3 hours of instruction weekly. Students admitted to the full IEP program will receive a minimum of 12 hours of personalized instruction, within small classes, so students may receive the necessary assistance to help them be successful once they are admitted to regular academic classes.
Students who may be directly admitted to regular undergraduate program, may also benefit from enrollment in selected courses (as determined by their performance on the English Entrance Exam) in order to further develop their English language skills.
Extracurricular Activities
In addition to in-class instruction each week, students will also have the opportunity to spend time using interactive media in our language lab, practice spoken English with a conversation partner, and attend various International Program and campus-wide functions.Students are encouraged to “learn by doing” and truly take advantage of this unique opportunity for English language learning.
