UC... According to Sarah

Sarah's Autobiography

Hmmm… About Me….

So I’m Sarah. I love orange juice, singing in my car, and Little House On The Prairie. I grew up in Southeastern Kentucky, Letcher County to be exact, in a family of six. I’m the oldest, with two sisters and a brother. I grew up in church and became a Christian when I was nine. My life has been pretty plain, that is, until I came to UC.

I’m a planner, so I knew I would be at Cumberland pretty early. I had been on tons of tours, but no school even compared to how comfy I felt here. As I was walking around, the professors I met were so down-to-earth and approachable. The students were all hanging out and having fun. The campus was beautiful and the buildings were grandiose and majestic. Everyone smiled or said hello, the flowers were blooming, birds sang, music played- I was pretty much hooked.

I’ve had three very interesting years here at UC thus far. I worked summer staff with Mountain Outreach (MO) here my freshman summer, learning the importance of power tools and construction. We build homes for needy families in the area while having WAY too much fun. Then I went to Venezuela for two months last summer, working with the Piaroa tribe in the Amazon Rainforest. Thanks to my professor, Mrs. Marsh, I was able to at least say “Help me, I’m lost!” in Spanish. I’m also a proud member of Phi Alpha Theta, the history honor society, and even got to go to Albuquerque with them. I’ve had some “all-nighters” writing papers, but I make sure to balance them out with movie nights and capture the flag games (on the whole campus, mind you).

Life in high school was good, but college life is where it’s at! So I guess life hasn’t been so plain since I came to UC. I think it would be impossible here :)

Returning to School… and the Busyness!

Fall Break was far too short. It was great to have a break after midterms, though. I decided to go home for the break and I worked on some research for my Irish History paper. It put a bit of a damper on the vacation, but I did get some rest.

It was good coming back too, because after relaxing, everyone is ready to be back. We finished up the Why> Campaign with Baptist Campus Ministries, where we focused on the biggest questions in life. Family Group Bible Study has been pretty great with the campaign- there are some really great girls there that I have become close to, well, like a family! Some more great BCM news- we are opening our own Coffeehouse! It will be a great time for just hanging out and getting to know people, plus it is right on campus.

Next week, Phi Alpha Theta (the History Honor Society) will be having a bake and book sale to raise money for our group. Dr. Smith is fixing something new, some kind of mini cheesecakes, so I am saving up my money. And the highlight of the week- the opening of the school play “The Tempest”. The girls in Family Group are all dressing up and going together. Our school has a great Theater program and they always have an amazing show.

Things have been stressful, but I still love it here. I’m trying to savor every minute of it, well, except for the homework part.

The Joys of Test Taking

So I’ve made it through my first tests. I’m pretty sure all my professors got together and planned all my tests in the same week. Well, I guess that is an exaggeration. But I am glad to have the first round of tests out of the way. It has been tricky juggling everything- I definitely have learned the valuable lesson of time management. I have even sacrificed my daily episode of Little House on the Prairie to get in some studying time!

Mountain Outreach just had a Big Project last Saturday and I think it was my favorite so far. We built a ramp for an elderly couple near the campus and got to talk with them while we worked. It was so much fun. I met some new friends too- there were some freshman girls, a few guy athletes, and even some professors there. We all hung out for lunch after the mornings work and then finished up around 3 pm. It was done in no time, and I even learned some new tools of the trade. I think I am pretty much an expert now.

Next week one of my history professors has invited our class over to his home to watch some Irish movies and have dinner. We are really excited about it, and I think some of my friends are all meeting up before so we can all walk over together. He made cookies for our first class meeting and they were delicious, so I guarantee dinner will be just as good. And that means no caf. food for a day! I can’t wait to see how the rest of the semester goes :)

Back To School Again

So I’m two weeks into classes and already I have two tests coming up- geez! The first weeks of school are always the most fun though. During Welcome Week, I went to the free movie at the theater with a bunch of my friends. I worked at the Activities Fair and even won once at the Mountain Outreach nail driving contest. Not to brag, but I do have a pretty mean swing. Kinda.

The rest of the week was great. They showed Iron Man in the gym and had free popcorn and drinks. Then on Friday we went to the Beach Party for freshman and played volleyball with a TON of people. After getting in some homework, I went home for Labor Day weekend. But I hurried back on Monday and got to visit some of my new friends. I played Cranium with some girls in Asher and then swung by and talked with some girls I met at Welcome Week. And I even made it back before doors closed at midnight!

Classes have been pretty good, too. I have some very interesting classes, especially Introduction to Sociology. We watched a film on Tuesday about Appalachia, and come to find out, it is about my hometown! I recognized all the places and even got to talk about it in class. So it’s kinda like I’m famous… haha.

Well, I think it is safe to say that my first week as a Senior here at UC has been a success. I’ve met lots of new people and had lots of fun with all the activities. Now I’ll I need is to start studying…
