Q & A with Jolina

1. Why did you choose University of the Cumberlands?

I chose UC because of the unique atmosphere that I was presented with the moment I stepped on campus. All my life, I dreamt of being enrolled at a university that not only would provide me with academic knowledge, but also with opportunities outside the classroom where I could use that knowledge to benefit others. UC has provided me with both.

2. What is there to do on weekends?

For me, weekends are the chance I have to take a breath and truly enjoy campus life. You can always find something to do at UC. In the winter, we go sledding, regardless of the amount of snow there is (We have dubbed it “grass sledding”)! Sometimes my friends and I just hang out together in the dorm watching movies and munching popcorn. During the warmer months, we also like to go to Cumberland Falls and hike on the numerous trails or just lie around in Boswell Park soaking up the sun and talking about whatever comes to us.

3. What is the food like?

You can always find something good to eat. For the health conscious, there is the salad bar, steamed vegetables and freshly prepared wraps. Pizza is quite popular and the hot-bar serves an assortment of meats, etc. And, of course, dessert is a must. If you have had a hard day, chocolate can soothe just about anything!

4. What are the residence halls like?

Living in a residence hall is half of the college experience. There is just nothing like it! Dorm life has allowed me to have sisters that I would never have otherwise known. We borrow each other’s clothes, watch sappy movies, etc. All residence halls have Internet, cable and phone hook-ups. Some rooms are larger than others, but it’s amazing what you can do with a room given some creativity!

5. Do you feel safe on campus?

UC is almost like a sanctuary. I pass so many familiar faces on the way to class each day. I feel very safe and comfortable with the surroundings here.

6. What recommendations do you have for incoming students?

Do not be afraid of the transition from high school to college. Just take one day at a time and enjoy that day to the fullest.

7. Is it hard to balance academics with extra curricular activities?

I have not found it difficult at all. In high school, I was in classes all day. In college, I am only in class for a small portion of the day. During those free hours, I study before practice or work, or take a small breather. I am an athlete and also have a work-study position in the school newspaper office. Initially, I wondered how I could possibly fit it all in. I have discovered that the busier I am, the better. It helps me stay organized!

8. Where do you see yourself after University of the Cumberlands?

The Lord has really been leading my heart to do mission work. I have had the opportunity to travel to Cancun, Mexico, Bogotá, Columbia, and Piraeus, Greece. My perspective on life certainly changed. After looking into the eyes of hungry children at an orphanage, I knew I would never be the same. I hope I will be able to someday travel to needy countries to help these children. My greatest dream would be to write about my experiences while I am there, and through my writing, change other people’s perspectives on life, as well.
