RE: Braces and Taping for Intercollegiate Sport Activities

This letter is to inform you that the University of the Cumberlands Athletic Training Department has only a LIMITED amount of athletic taping and bracing supplies. The braces and tape are kept in stock and used for injuries as they occur during your season of play. Therefore, if you have a pre-existing condition or have used tape or supportive devices for any reason in the past, including prevention, please note that you must provide your own braces for these problems. If you suffer an acute injury while participating at UC, any in-stock equipment used will be assigned and logged out in your name. Assigned equipment will need to be returned at the end of each season or year of participation as arranged with your supervising ATC; or the replacement cost of the equipment will be assigned to your student account.

If there is NOT an athletic brace available for your pre-existing condition, please obtain a note from your medical doctor explaining why a brace will not work for your condition. Have your doctor identify specifically what athletic taping technique you will require, why it is necessary, and for what duration it will be needed. You should be able to obtain ankle, knee, shoulder, wrist, and other braces (including shelf orthotics/insoles for your shoes) from your local physical therapy clinic, medical supply/pharmacy, or sporting goods store.

We apologize for the inconvenience this might cause, but there is no way we can brace and tape all 600+ of our intercollegiate athletes for pre-existing problems and still have supplies available should a new injury occur. If you have any questions or comments feel free to call the Athletic Training Department at 606-539-4369 or email the head athletic trainer, Mrs. Peggy Haus, ATC at phaus@ucumberlands.edu and she will forward your request to the staff ATC assigned to your sport. We look forward to working with you in the coming year.
