Athletic Training is an allied health care profession recognized by the American Medical Association. The athletic trainer is educated and skilled in several practice domains including:

• Professionals who specialize in prevention and early intervention of injuries are in demand. The Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) is specifically trained and educated to meet the challenge of providing quality comprehensive healthcare to the physically active. These trained professionals help injured individuals obtain proper medical treatment and avoid prolonged disruption of activities of daily living.

  Specific duties of the Certified Athletic Trainer are numerous and include:

• Emergency care and immediate on-site medical assistance
• Direct referral to appropriate health care provider
• Providing on-site evaluation and injury care, follow-up treatment, rehabilitation, and safe return to activity
• Coordinating with Physicians:

  Pre-participation physical exam and health history screenings

  Event coverage

  Post-injury care

  Determination of safe return to activity

• Safety inspection of facilities
• Instruction and supervision of staff
• Maintaining accurate records of all injuries and treatments rendered
• Education and guidance of health issues including HIV, drugs and alcohol, eating disorders, etc.
• Consultation regarding development and implementation of conditioning and flexibility programs
• Other
