2007 Cross Country Season Wrap-Up

The University of the Cumberlands Cross Country teams began to rebuild the team and shift leadership to younger runners this past season. The men and women’s teams finished 2 nd in the MSC and 3 rd in the Region. Four Cumberland runners competed at the NAIA National race.

The men’s team was led by seniors, Aleer Dout (Phoenix, AZ), Juan Robles (Las Vegas, NV), and Brett Ratliff (Pikeville, KY). For the juniors, Brian Jones (Cawood, KY), Josh Laughlin (Bellbrook, OH), Trevor Laughlin (Port Royal, KY), Seth Darrell (Monroe, OH), Josh Patrick (Williamsburg, KY), William Slider (Louisville, KY), and Marius Cozmanciuc (Bucharest, Romania). The lone sophomore was Jaron Hammons ( Bimble, KY). The new comers on the team included Zak Zivkovic (Strongsville, OH), Nathan Clouse (Corbin, KY), and Gary Smith (Virgie, KY) who red-shirted for the Patriots.

For the ladies, the seniors Whitney Brainard ( Somerset, KY), Kristin Parrott ( Williamsburg, KY), and Kelly Seifert ( Lancaster, OH) led the women through the season. The lone junior was Christina Stodgill ( Owensboro, KY). The sophomores included Kayla King ( Wilmore, KY), Elyse Velte ( Waynesville, OH), Becky Dyer ( Oakland, ME) and Melia Jewell ( Cincinnati, OH). A large freshmen class included, Sara Hobbs ( Pineville, KY), Jerrica Payton ( Liberty, KY), Amber Hueseman ( Auruor, IN), Brittany Meyers ( Bell County, KY), Natasha Sydnor ( Elizabethtown, KY), and Brooke White ( Bell County, KY).

The Patriots raced against many competitive teams this season. At the Queen City Invitational, the women placed 6 th. At the Cedarville Invitational the men placed 9 th and the women placed 7 th. At the Greater Louisville Classic, the women placed 3 rd and the men placed 7 th. The next competition was the Memphis Twilight Classic. The men finished in 21 st place and the women in 16 th place. At the Southeastern Classic, the ladies finished 7 th and the men completed the course placing 8 th. At the Mid-South Regional Conference the men and women placed 3 rd in the Region and 2 nd in the MSC. This competition led two females, Whitney Brainard and Elyse Velte, and two men, Juan Robles and Seth Darrell, to the NAIA National meet.

The Mid-South Conference named Whitney Brainard, Elyse Velte, Kristin Parrott, Marius Cozmanciuc, Juan Robles, and Brett Ratliff to the All-Conference squad. Whitney Brainard, Christina Stodgill, and Brian Jones were named Scholar Athletes by the NAIA. The Mid-South Conference coaches honored Coach Stroud as the Coach of the Year for the women. Robles was named Runner of the Week by the MSC for his performance in the Southeastern Classic. Seth Darrell was also given the honor of Runner of the Week for his performance in the Memphis Twilight Classic.

The Patriots are already looking and preparing for next season. The Cross Country Team hopes to improve from this season and dominate in the MSC and Region XI of the NAIA in 2008.
