2006 Cross Country Season Wrap-Up
The University of the Cumberlands Cross Country teams accomplished a lot this year with such a young team. The men’s teams was named Regional Champions and competed at the NAIA National Cross Country Championship.
Both teams did especially well considering there where many new, young athletes. They were led by the juniors, Brett Ratliff ( Pikeville, KY), Carl Roberts ( Austin, IN) and Josh Patrick ( Williamsburg, KY). Sophomore athletes for the season were Brian Jones ( Cawood, KY), Seth Darrell ( Monroe, KY), Josh Laughlin ( Bellbrook, OH), Trevor Laughlin ( Port Royal, KY), and Marius Cozmanciuc ( Bucharest, Romania). Freshmen competing during the season were Joshua Brainard ( Somerset, KY), Aleer Duot ( Phoenix, AZ), Jaron Hammons ( Bimble, KY), Tony Henderson ( Huber Heights, OH), Andrew Brown (East Bernstead, KY), Aymen Habiballah ( North Miami Beach, FL), and Will Slider ( Louisville, KY).
For the ladies, the seniors dominated with sisters Kelly & Shelly Schnee ( Milan, OH). Also, juniors Whitney Brainard ( Somerset, KY) and Susie Norris contributed great talent to the team. The lone sophomore was Christina Stodghill ( Owensboro, KY). Freshman for UC were Rebecca Dyer ( Oakland, NE), Kayla King ( Wilmore, KY), Warry Woodward ( Smithville, VA) and Elyse Velte ( Waynesville, KY) who performed excellent for being such a young athlete.
The Patriots raced against many competitive teams this season. At for the Miami University Invitational, the men placed 3 rd and the women 2 nd. At the Cedarville Invitational the men tied for 1 st and the women placed 4 th. At the Greater Louisville Invitational, the men placed 23 rd. The next competition was the Wilmington College Fall Classic. The men finished in 1 st place and the women in 3 rd. At the Southeastern Classic, the ladies finished 10 th and the men completed the course placing 8 th. The Mid-South Regional Conference was a successful tournament for the Men, who dominated, placing 1 st and the women finished in 3 rd place. This competition led one female, Kelly Schnee, and seven men, to the NAIA National meet where the men finished 14 th overall.
The Mid-South Conference named Kelly Schnee, Whitney Brainard, Shelly Schnee, and Elyse Velte ( Waynesville, OH) to the All-Conference squad. Academic All Conference honorees were Kelly Schnee, Shelly Schnee ( Milan, OH), Susie Norris ( Campbellsburg, KY), Whitney Brainard ( Somerset, KY) and Christina Stodghill ( Owensboro, KY). The Mid-South Conference gave the Runner of the Year to Josh Laughlin as he led the Patriots this season. He was also selected to the All-Conference team. Other Patriots receiving All-Conference honors were Aleer Duot (Phoenix, AZ), Seth Darrell (Monroe, KY), Marius Cozmanciuc, Brett Ratliff, and Carl Roberts.
Leaders on the team for this season were Kelly Schnee for the women and for the men Marius Cozmanciuc and Josh Laughlin. The highlight of the season was the men winning the conference and regional races and getting the opportunity to compete in the NAIA National Tournament once again.
