Men’s Golf 2007-2008 Wrap-Up
Having been under the tutelage of first year Head Coach Chris Kraftick for the fall season, the University of the Cumberlands Men’s Golf team kicked off the spring season on a good note.
The Patriots opened the season at the Union College Invitational. They finished with an impressive 3 rd place finish out of nine teams. Cumberlands Michael Burgan (Dry Ridge, KY) tied for 5 th, won the scorecard playoff, and took his place on the All Invitational Team.
With this momentum, the Patriots moved on to the News Tribune Invitational in Rome, Georgia. Cumberlands finished 15 th out of 20 teams. Senior golfer Justin Price ( Somerset, KY) led his team with a total score of 155. Price went on to finish third at the Campbellsville and Union University Invites. He shot a combined 146 at Campbellsville and a 143 at Union. With these impressive finishes, Price captured Mid-South Conference honors being named the Mid-South Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week.
Price and his team later hosted the Southeastern Kentucky Intercollegiate Golf Tournament in London, Kentucky. The Patriots finished an outstanding 6 th place out of 22 teams. Again, showing that they are capable of leading, Burgan and Price delivered. Burgan shot 79 and 72 giving him a 151 and 8 th place in his home tournament. Price was not far behind Burgan. Price tallied a 77 each day giving him 154 and 16 th place.
Entering the Mid-South Conference Tournament on a high, the Patriots came out celebrating as well. Finishing second out of seven teams with a two day total of 607, Price and Burgan earned Mid-South All-Conference Honors. Price finished in a tie for 5 th along with fellow teammate Derek Hribak (Centerville, OH) with a 150 while Burgan came in at 10 th with a 152.
Continuing to progress, the Patriots entered the Region XI Golf Tournament in Springfield, Tennessee, hoping to end the season on an impressive note. Impressive it was, as the Patriots secured a 5 th place finish in the Region XI Tournament out of 13 teams. Burgan led the Patriot team tied for fifth with a 224 two day total while Price came in seventh with a 225. Burgan was honored for his Top 5 finish being named to the All-Region XI Team. The men ended the year with a 53-28 record.
The Patriots lone senior Justin Price will be missed as he is graduated with a degree in Communications. Coach Chris Kraftick with a year under his belt has now seen the success the Patriots can achieve. Look for Kraftick to recruit quality players, continue to work and train the veterans, and inspire greatness as he hopes to guide the Patriots to a Championship season in 2009.
