University of the Cumberlands Men's Soccer 05-06 Preview

With a new school name, a new coach, and a new year arriving, the University of the Cumberlands men’s soccer team is looking to add a new level to their already accomplished game.

“I think the men’s soccer program is ready to go to the next level,” explains the Patriots new head coach Paulo Neto. “The next level for us at this point is qualifying for the National Tournament.” The Patriots placed second in the Mid-South Conference tournament last year.

After last year’s season, which was their most successful season in the school’s history, Coach Neto’s plan is to get to know the players on an individual basis, to introduce his coaching style, methods, and philosophy, and to gradually stamp his name into the Patriots program.

“The great majority of the players who made that [having a successful season] possible are back, which gives me the confidence that we can go even further this year,” said Neto.

“We have a great deal of experience and leadership provided by the returning players such as Russell Stewart, Ashleigh Townsend, Stephen Reddy, Gerard Brennan, and Shawn Picou,” Coach Neto said. “I am also looking forward to the return of players such as Joe Townsend, Gino Ray, and Bosko Cupac who have a great share of contribution to the success of the program in their rookie year, but are far from reaching their full potential.”

The incoming freshmen also hope to share their talents and skills on the field. Lyndon Pompey, Sean Aspenlind, Blazej Skoczylas, Jordan Dagley, Phillip Goundry, John Mills, and Thomas Eatherly join the Patriots this year.

Look to the Patriots to have a great year while they “strive to have [their] name among the top 25 teams in the NAIA national rankings,” proclaims Coach Neto.
