University of the Cumberlands Men’s Soccer Wrap-up
The Patriot men rose to the top this season with a school best 16-5-1, falling just short of their ultimate goal - the NAIA National Tournament.
In the Region XI tournament, Cumberlands beat Lambuth University and top 20 nationally ranked Martin Methodist. The team went on to fall short in the championship match to Lindsey Wilson College who went on to lose in the third round of the National tournament. The Patriots also placed second in the Mid-South Conference.
Thanks to the strong defensive showing lead by Steven DeGeorge (Loudon, TN), Russell Stewart (Forestfield, Scotland), Stephen Reddy (Frisco, TX), Ashleigh Townsend (Halifax, England) and Gerard Brennan (Meath, Ireland) the Patriots offense shined. Shawn Picou (Houma, LA) and Will Wilson (Raceland, LA) led the team in goals after knocking in 14 a piece for the season. Gino Ray (Slidell, LA) ended in a close third with 12 goals. In assists, Bosko Cupac (Somerset, KY) led the team after dishing out 14. Goalkeeper Steven DeGeorge (Loudon, TN) spent many weeks on top of the Goals Against Average list for the Mid-South Conference and ended the season with a GAA of 1.05.
Picou and Stewart both received honorable mention on the NAIA All-American team as well as first team all-region. DeGeorge, Picou and Townsend all made first team all conference with Wilson, Cupac, Ray and Brennan representing Cumberlands on the second team. Stewart was the lone Patriot on the honorable mention conference team. DeGeorge, Charlie Pait (Louisville, KY), Stephen Reddy (Frisco, TX), Tyler Sweeney (Chesapeake, VA) and Jonathan Strange (Hendersonville, TN) all claimed spots on the academic all-conference squad this season for Cumberland.
Look for the Patriots to shine again next season as they return to the field eager and hungry for a National Tournament appearance.
