Men’s Soccer 2006 Season Wrap-Up

The University of the Cumberlands Men’s soccer team had an outstanding season with an overall record of 15-5-2. However, they fell just short of their ultimate goal, the NAIA National Tournament.

The Patriots finished second in the Mid-South Conference behind rivals Lindsey Wilson College. Cumberlands took the third seed going into the Region XI Tournament, which placed them with Lindsey Wilson in the semi-final match. Facing the Blue Raiders for the third time in the season, the Patriots were defeated 1-0 in one of the best games of the season. Unfortunately, the Patriots did not receive a bid to the national tournament and the season suddenly came to an end.

The Patriots’ strong defense were led by key players, including senior captain Russell Stewart (Airdrie, Scotland), senior Ashleigh Townsend (Halifax, England), junior Joe Townsend (Halifax, England), and freshman goalkeeper Alonso Jimenez (Odessa, TX), who had 65 saves this season and nine shutouts.

The offense was led by the MSC Player of the Year Shawn Picou ( Houma, LA), who tallied 21 goals for the season. Junior Gino Ray ( Slidell, LA) added 13 goals and junior Bosko Cupac ( Somerset, KY) scored six goals and had six assists.

Many Patriots received honors at the Mid-South Conference banquet. First Team All-Conference honors went to Picou, Ashleigh Townsend, Cupac, Joe Townsend, Gino Ray, and Jimenez. Second Team honors went to Stewart and sophomore Igor Petsch ( Bogota, Columbia). Sophomore Jordan Dagley ( Somerset, KY) and sophomore Sean Aspenlind
(Sacramento, CA) both made the honorable mention All-Conference team. Aspenlind, Blazej Skoczylas ( Ontario, Canada), Tyler Sweeney ( Virginia Beach, VA), and Chris Waters ( Grove City, OH) were all named to the Academic All-Conference team.

Russell Stewart and Shawn Picou were also named to the NAIA Honorable Mention All-American Team.

The Patriots main objective next season is to finally make it to the NAIA National Tournament. A few key players will graduate this year, but the Patriots have high hopes to succeed in 2007.
