We finished the last 5 games of the season with a 4-0-1 record. This left us with a 7-8-2 record overall. To be fair, our schedule was a little unusual with going through a stretch where we played a lot of tough games then ending the season with some easier games. Our record at the end of the season is probably a good indication of our play. We were pretty much around a .500 team the whole season. It was not that we played remarkably well at the end of the season to win 4 of 5 of our last games. We played at the same level as our other games. We just beat opponents we should have in the last games of the season. As we finished our regular season this week, it was also the start of our conference tournament. Because we tied Lambuth University in our game against them, it left us tied with them for 4 th place in the conference. We were also tied with them in all the tie breakers. We knew that we would play Lambuth in the 1 st round of conference it was a question of where. The higher seed would host the game and that was pretty big considering that Lambuth and us are 5 and ½ hours apart. A coin toss would be the deciding factor to settle the site of the game, and they won.
So off to Lambuth we went on Friday afternoon for our match on Saturday. After watching the video of the last Lambuth match Coach Rach and I felt that we played at maybe 60% of our ability. If we could just get a little better performance then we would get the result. Unfortunately it seemed like the game was much of the same old stuff that we saw the first game. We caught a lucky break on a free kick that they did not clear out and scored in the 12 th minute. We were under siege for much of the 1 st half and they broke free and scored to tie the game 1-1 at half. The second half we came out a little stronger and much of the first 15 minutes were played in the midfield. They gradually began to take control and get the better of opportunities. With about 18 minutes remaining in the game they were awarded a free kick about 25 yards from the goal. Their player stepped up and curled a lovely shot in the upper 90. It was a great goal. Less then a minute later we gave up an extremely soft goal. Our keeper has made some many good saves this game but had one mental error and it cost a goal. However to be fair that goal did not decide the game. We gave them too many opportunities and did not record a shot on goal in the last 18 minutes of the game. If anything Lambuth played with more urgency in those last 18 minutes of the game and spent more time in our half. The result was a fair one and they deserved to win.
We have qualified by Regionals which might sound a little confusing since we lost in Regionals. Our regular season results determined whether we qualified or not. Our schedule is more challenging then a lot of schools that we qualified in front of. Although some of them had better records, they did not play the same quality opponents. Lambuth might not even qualify for Regionals even though they deserve to just because their schedule is not tough. Our Regional game will be Saturday. We find out Wednesday who and where we play.
