Tough week for us. In a week, that we played 3 matches that could go either way and had to play every other day, we know that several wins would do a great deal for our confidence. We have not won a match this year that could have gone either way and still have to prove to ourselves we can. It started out a good note against Milligan on Monday. We played well, and it was a tight game with both teams getting chances but none finishing. We were playing better each minute of the game and growing in confidence. Our executing was as close to training as I have seen this season. We got a complete effort from everyone on the field which is the first time every one has carried their own weight in terms of effort. Not one player looked to another to carry the slack. Unfortunately for us they got a great goal in the 73 rd minute and with us pushing forward, they scored with 10 seconds left in the game for 2-0 score line.
Not to sound like a cliché but I know if we would use this game to build on Monday’s performance, we would win one of these games that could go either way. It would be a great opportunity against a conference opponent in Georgetown College. It would also help us in the attempt to qualify for Regionals which had been hurt by the loss to Campbellsville. The game started off on a bright note for us scoring early in the game without a lot of chances. We never gained any energy, momentum and confidence from the goal and spent a good portion of the half defending against a determined team. They would score 2 to gain the lead. 5 minutes before half our play began to pick and we showed life. Fortunate for us we scored another goal right before half; again without a lot of opportunities. Scoring without a lot of opportunities is something we have been hard pressed to do this season so I was optimistic. In the 2 nd half, the fact that we scored 2 goals without playing our best half did not motivate us to come out stronger. We were a step or two behind Georgetown the entire 2 nd half. They scored all four goals in the 2 nd half on one on one with our keeper because their player was able to dribble by one of our defenders or race by one of our defenders as they received the ball and go straight to goal without any defenders covering for others. Another lost opportunity for us to get a victory against a quality opponent.
By Friday, it got to the point where we just did not want a win we needed a win. I was hoping the players would respond positively and dig down for that effort we needed. The game against King College started on a bright note again with us scoring early in the first half. However for the 2 nd game in a row an early goal did not lift our play and we struggled to gain possession of the ball in midfield. They were able to score late in the first half for a 1-1 halftime score. The game was right there for us to snag. We had to answer the question of whether we would put enough effort and execution to do so. Early in the 2 nd half we finished an opportunity to go up 2-1. Another goal without having a lot of opportunities that is becoming a recurring theme and a positive aspect of our game. However the goal did not inspire us the 2 nd half. We struggled to maintain any sort of possession and were dodging bullets from them. They were able to break through in the final 10 minutes of the game to score 2 goals on 2 one on one with the keepers. Another disappointing loss for us. This week we will have to answer the question of whether we can win one of these games that could go either way. Monday is our first chance against Tennessee Wesleyan then Berea College on Wednesday and Lambuth University on Saturday. Hopefully we can come out of this week 3-0 and run the table for the rest of the season to build the confidence as we head to playoffs.
