University of the Cumberlands 2008 Softball Preview

The University of the Cumberlands Softball team is in progress of working the field and preparing for the upcoming spring season. With talent in various areas and so many newcomers, the team is syncing and learning their roles on the field. Last season, Patriots Softball accumulated a record of 24-31in season play and a conference record of 6-12. This year the team is out to improve that outcome.

Two key players from the team were lost due to graduation last year. These ladies are Kim Catoe ( Chattanooga, TN) and Marie Vickers ( Knoxville, TN). Catoe served as the team’s lead off hitter and center fielder and Vickers played right fielder throughout her collegiate career.

Head Coach Angie Dean commented, “We will miss both of their leadership, speed and aggressiveness.”

Because there is a widespread amount of talent on the team this season, there are several players in every class that are expected to have a large impact. From the seniors, Whitney Piar ( Lancaster, OH), Whitney Kirby ( Franklin, OH), Jessica Taulbee ( Greenville, SC), Marie Cordero ( London, KY), and Tiffany Meadors ( Lancaster, KY) are all expected to be leaders for the underclassmen on and off the field. Last season, Piar pitched three shut-outs and recorded 11 wins for the team and is serving as pitcher again this season. Piar also had two doubles, one triple, and 12 RBIs. Kirby, the team’s first baseman, recorded 328 putouts, nine doubles, one triple, and 25 RBIs. Taulbee, second baseman, accumulated 70 putouts, nine doubles, one triple, two homeruns, 18 RBIs, and four stolen bases. Catcher Cordero made 179 putouts, five doubles, one homerun, and ten RBIs. Lastly, Meadors finished the season with four putouts and two RBIs.

Several underclassmen are expected to contribute to the team’s success this year. Juniors are Samantha Kooch ( Powell, TN), Brittany Turner ( London, KY), and Lara Jackson ( Hawesville, KY). Sophomores include Mindy Breitholle ( Fairfield, OH) and Fahlin Pulliam ( Hawesville, KY). Kooch finished the season with eight doubles, two triples, three homeruns, 23 RBIs, and four stolen bases. Turner played catcher and accumulated 188 putouts, one double, five homeruns, and 17 RBIs. Shortstop Jackson made 89 putouts, 97 assists, eight doubles, four triples, five homeruns, 35 RBIs and three stolen bases. Breitholle contributed with her pitching skills and recorded ten wins, two shutouts, four doubles, three homeruns, and 13 RBIs. Lastly, Pulliam finished the season with eight putouts and seven RBIs. Incoming freshman that are expected to step up are Michelle Breen (Springboro, OH), Hollie Byrum (Franklin , OH), Jenna Suttles (Cincinnati, OH), Whitney Delk (Jamestown, TN) and Courtney Delk (Jamestown, TN).

In addition to all of those individual accomplishments, the team played well in the MSC tournament last year as well. They finished 3-2 after defeating Pikeville College, West Virginia Tech, and Georgetown College. This year the ladies have already shown many great strides on the practice field and are evolving into a softball team that will go further.

Head Coach Angie Dean had this to say about her girls, “The early outlook for the 2008 softball team is a very positive one. The team has a great mix of veteran players and talented young players. The biggest difference in this year’s team and last year’s is commitment and attitude. I haven’t heard any of our players talk about stats or individual accomplishments this fall, but I have seen players trying to make our team better and give everything they can to do so. These committed players want to be here at Cumberlands and play the best softball of their lives for UC.”

Patriot Softball is scheduled to begin their season in a home competition on February 20 th. They will host Milligan College in a double header starting at 2 PM.
