Dean is now entering her 12th season as head coach for the Patriots, finishing the 2009 season 15-21 overall and fourth in the Mid-South Conference
Tournament. During her years at UC Coach Dean has stayed heavily involved in the conference serving as a softball chairman for six years and also as a Region 11 rater for three years.
Before being named head coach, Dean was the assistant coach under Julie Hill for two seasons at the Cumberlands. Prior to that, Dean helped coach both volleyball and softball at Maryville High School in Maryville, TN. Dean has also been a part of the volleyball coaching staff at the Cumberlands for eight of 14 years.
Graduated from Cumberland College (now Cumberlands) in 1990 with a degree in Secondary Education, Dean had a stellar career as an Indian (now Patriot).
Though known for her outstanding defensive skills, Dean averaged .384. During her four year tenure, her teams overall record was 97-40. She was named All-KWIC (Kentucky Women’s Intercollegiate Conference) in ’87-’89 and All-KIAC (Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) in 1998. The 1989 32-4 team, Dean’s senior season, was named KIAC and KWIC champions.
Dean came to Cumberlands from Karns High School in Knoxville, Tennessee where she was a four year varsity starter at second base and shortstop. While at Karns, Dean was named to both All-District and All-KIL teams.
Coach Dean gives all her effort to building the skills and confidence of her young team, she stresses to them the importance of education: "I want to make sure each of my players gets a quality education, and I want to do all I can to help make their time at the University of the Cumberlands a positive part of their lives."

Ms. Heather Branum
Graduate Assistant Coach
Heather Branum is entering her first year as a Graduate Assistant Softball Coach. She hails from Heiskell, TN and now resides in Williamsburg, KY and is currently working on her Master’s Degree in Education.
Branum was graduated from Anderson County High School. After graduating, she made her way to Cumberlands after being signed by Head Softball Coach Angie Dean. She played under Dean’s instruction during her time as a Patriot.
Branum was graduated from Cumberlands in 2004. Since that time she has spent three years teaching at the high school level in the field of special education math. She also gained valuable coaching experience coaching softball for the past three years as both an assistant and then the head coach.
Assistant Coach Branum commented, “I’m excited to be part of the UC Softball program again. I think UC is a great place to grow academically and spiritually. I hope to bring my knowledge of the game to the players and help them reach their potential.”
