University of the Cumberlands Softball 06-07 Wrap-Up

The University of the Cumberlands Softball team ended their season after completing the conference tournament in Jeffersontown, KY. The Patriots’ overall record ended at 24-31 and 6-12 in conference play. The ladies went 3-2 in the tournament defeating Pikeville College (3-2), West Virginia Tech (8-0), and Georgetown College (4-3). They returned to Williamsburg after falling to Campbellsville University in double elimination with scores of 0-5 and 0-3. In the end, the team ranked fourth in the conference.

Several of the Patriot ladies have been honored for their accomplishments during the season. Sophomore third baseman Katie Kitchen ( Georgetown, KY) and sophomore shortstop Lara Jackson ( Hawesville, KY) both made the All-Conference team. Kitchen was also named Mid-South Conference Player of the Week. Being recognized for Honorable Mention are junior pitcher Whitney Piar ( Lancaster, OH), freshman pitcher Mindy Breitholle ( Fairfield, OH), senior center fielder Kim Catoe ( Chattanooga, TN), and sophomore left fielder Samantha Kooch ( Powell, TN). Lastly, achieving Academic All-Conference recognition are sophomore Meagan Aiken (Campbell County, TN), senior Maggie Callis (Van Lear, KY), Catoe, Kooch, and junior second baseman Jessica Taulbee (Greenville, SC).

In addition, many records were broken this year, individually as well as a team. Records broken by the team included Runs Scored (228/173), RBIs (215/154), Homeruns (33/19), Doubles (67/62), Triples (tied with13), and Pitching Wins (tied with 24). Individually, Catoe and Kitchen had a lot to show. Catoe broke the Hits and Stolen Bases records. She had 54 hits compared to previous 53 and she accumulated 21 stolen bases out of 22 attempts compared to 20 out of 23. Kitchen proudly broke the Homeruns record with 10 compared to the previous 9.

This year the team and coaches will bid farewell to three players, Catoe, Callis, and Marie Vickers ( Knoxville, TN), due to graduation. These amazing ladies will be greatly missed by everyone. Head Coach Angie Dean and assistant Michelle Stump are hard at work to recruit new players who will fill these positions with ease and bring new personality.

The 2007 season for the UC Softball Patriots was a learning experience for players and coaches. They look to learn from their mistakes and build on skills mastered for 2008 so they can push further in the Conference tournament and advance to Region. Until then, the ladies will be preparing to meet these goals until they step out onto the diamond again next spring.
