The Women’s Wrestling Patriots of the University of the Cumberlands carry tradition everywhere they go. When you hear talk about women’s collegiate wrestling, the Patriots are consistently mentioned. Coach Kip Flanik just helped that reputation by signing California native Jamila McBride.
Jamila has multiple tournament wins under her belt including the California Women’s State Championship, the USGWA Oregon State Championship, the Northern California Women’s Regional tournament, and the USGWA California State Championship, all in 2008. She also finished as runner up in the USGWA Washington State Championship and the USGWA Women’s Nationals in 2008. In 2009, McBride took 2nd in the California Women’s State Championship and 1st in the Northern California Women’s Regional tournament. She was named to the honor roll at her high school from 2005 to 2009 and was also named captain of the high school men’s team from 2006-2009. A varsity letter winner in wrestling, Jamila also was named the H.E.R.O. Award winner from 2007 to 2009. The H.E.R.O. Award is earned when a teacher chooses a student out of all their classes who they feel has shown excellence in academics and character and has gone above and beyond what is expected of them academically and socially.
University of the Cumberlands Head Women’s Wrestling Coach Kip Flanik commented, “Jamila is a very talented upper weight from wrestling rich California. She is exactly the type of student athlete we look for at the University of the Cumberlands. Tough, intelligent, and very motivated! I expect great things from her.”
