Harlan County's Martin Signs with UC Softball

The University of the Cumberlands (UC) softball team is reloading for the upcoming 2011 season and another key signee had the ability to make an immediate impact on the team. Whitley Martin has signed to be a member of the Patriots softball team in 2011.

Martin is the daughter of Bill and Louise Martin and is a graduate of Harlan County High School. Martin, who helped to lead the Lady Bears to a 52nd District title and a spot in the 13th Region semifinals last season, has played a big role for the Lady Bears.

When asked about playing at UC, Whitley said, “The University of the Cumberlands is a great school with great people and I am looking forward to working hard and getting to play with the girls from UC. I am thankful to Coach Dean for giving me this opportunity.”

UC Head Softball Coach Angie Dean said, “The biggest thing is the need for speed and outfielders right now. So, any time we can find a girl with as much speed as Whitley and can cover that ground that opens our eyes. You can coach and practice, but if you have speed, you have speed. You can only get better with strength and conditioning. That’s an intangible that everybody’s looking for.”
