After a very successful 2005-2006 season, the Patriots are hoping to continue to build on their success. Despite finishing last season with a winning record and numerous top finishes in tournaments, the team has added several NCAA Division II and Division III teams to the schedule to increase the level of competition.
The Patriots lost only one senior last season, Noel Zvonar ( Jonesboro, GA). Stepping up to lead the way for the men’s team this season will be Senior Captain Ian Wenstrand ( Elizabethtown, KY). Other returnees contributing to the team are Eddie Von Hertsenberg ( Cincinnati, OH), Price Richardson ( Corvallis , MT) , Aaron McCormick ( Bellevue , NE) , and Will Rechsteiner ( Kennesaw, GA). The team welcomes top athletes Skipper Wells ( Tallahassee, FL), Andrew Lenard ( Poland), Trevor Lowe ( Flagler Beach, FL), Cameron Craig ( Brownsboro, AL) Andrew Hoffman ( Kennesaw, GA), Caleb Taylor ( Kennesaw, GA), and Jeff Belliveau ( Waterloo, Ontario) to Cumberlands.
After the loss of key athletes Christen Heideman ( Tallahassee, FL) and Catherine Mack ( Boca Raton, FL), Captains Lane Royer ( Knoxville, TN) and Jessica Harrison ( Kennesaw, GA) will help to guide the women through a successful 2006-2007 season. The Captains will rely on returning members Carol Clayton ( Woodstock, GA), Laurie Skaggs ( Tullahoma , TN ), and Staci Barada ( Ashland, KY) to aid newcomers Alex Robertson ( Shreveport, LA), Marisa Lobacz ( Acworth, GA), and Molli Young ( Plano, TX) in reaching their maximum potential.
Losing only three seniors and gaining a recruiting class filled with a multitude of talents and skills, the swim team has the solid foundation it needs to surpass the success of last season. Coach Garry Nelson stated, “This is my best class of freshman talent since arriving at UC.” Mixing that freshman talent with the talent already present on the team will make the Patriots victorious.
