SIMON FRASER DEFENDS NATIONAL TITLES ON DAY ONE
ST. PETERS, Mo. - Simon Fraser University (B.C.) got off to a quick start on day one of the 2005 NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championships held at St. Peters Rec-Plex in St. Peters, Missouri. The Clan won all four of its events on the first day.
The Clan men's 800-meter freestyle relay team broke a 14-year-old record set by Drury College (Mo.) in 1991. Elliot Burger, Jonathan Eng, Felix Steinhauer and Paul Wilkins combined to beat the old record by .73, with a time of 6:46.13. Eng, Wilkins and Burger repeat as national champions in the event. California Baptist University finished second with a time of 6:49.75 and Spring Hill College finished third at 7:07.05.
SFU's women's relay team of Kathryn Rosberg, Courtenay Mulhern, Tina Hoang and Amber Dykes, finished with a time of 7:37.09, just .02 off the meet record. Rosberg, Hoang and Dykes were members of the 800-freestyle relay team that brought home a national title last year. Cumberland College (Ky.) finished second with a time of 7:45.94 and California Baptist finished third at 7:47.27.
Simon Fraser's Grant Brehaut won the men's 1-Meter Diving championship while The Clan's Hayley Rosenlund took home first place in the women's 3-Meter Diving finals.
The Simon Fraser men and women look to maintain their leads tomorrow, as the NAIA Swimming and Diving Championships continue with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. and finals beginning at 6 p.m. (CST).
