University of the Cumberlands Tennis 07-08 Preview

Cumberlands tennis looks to continue rebuilding and striving to reach their maximum potential after only losing three seniors and adding many talented freshmen. Retaining several athletes from the starting line-up, the Patriots have strong leaders to guide the newcomers and keep the team on the path to excellence.

The Patriot ladies finished the 2006-2007 season with a 3-2 conference record. Returning members Jessica Lowrie (Williamsburg, KY), Leona Baumgardner (Williamsburg, KY), Haley Farris (Corbin, KY), and Mary Ngiam (Miri, Malaysia) poses a wealth of experience and knowledge to share with newcomers to the team. Freshmen Kelcey Bauer (Fairfield, OH), Donna Strong (Dwarf, KY), Alissa Ellis (Stanford, KY), Shelby Stanley (Columbus, OH) look to strengthen the squad and improve upon the team’s finish last season.

Losing two key starters from last season, the men’s team looks to continue building up their team after a 2-3 conference finish last season. The two returning members, Aaron Ngiam ( Malaysia) and Higor Silva ( Brazil), will be using their experience to assist the newcomers and help the team reach their full potential this season. The many new freshmen include Oscar Panteja ( Germany/ Indonesia), John Hill ( Carlisle, OH), Andrew Hill ( Carlisle, OH), Jacob Pace ( Corbin, KY), Chris Bright ( Danville, KY), Stefan Crowe ( Carlisle, OH), Carl Petrey ( Williamsburg, KY), Jordan Dugger ( Harlan, KY), Aaron Howell ( Bativa, OH), Matt Croley ( Williamsburg, KY), and David Fei ( Sydney, Australia). The men must rise above the challenge of such a young team to conclude 2008 above last season.

The Patriots will challenge conference rivals Lindsey Wilson College, Georgetown College, Campbellsville University, and Pikeville College multiple times throughout the season. Other programs, such as Carson Newman College, Centre College, Union College, Eastern Kentucky University, Maryville University, Berea College, and Lincoln Memorial University will challenge the Patriots and award them with experiences necessary for building a stronger team.
