University of the Cumberlands Tennis 05-06 Preview
After a successful finish last season, the Patriots still have much to work toward this year. With the loss of several key members, this year is definitely a rebuilding one for the team. The Patriots must work together to reach their full potential and finish the season on top.
In 2004-2005, the men’s tennis team finished second in the MSC and twenty-third in the NAIA final rating report. The Patriots finished the season with an overall winning record. The men’s team graduated two seniors last year as well as losing two other top four ranked players. The rebuilding, however, will not take long. Players such as Mitchel Hubert ( Hendersonville, TN), Anthony Un ( Malaysia), Felix Koch (Germany/Indonesia), Fernando Ascencios ( Lima, Peru), Robert Porter ( Corbin, KY), and Aaron Leftwich ( Corbin, KY) are easily capable of rising to the challenge and leading the team to victory.
The 2004-2005 season for the ladies was a tough one. With the addition of Whitney Hawkins (East Bernstadt, KY), Stephanie Tallent ( Albany, KY), Jessica Lowrie ( Williamsburg, KY), and Yamila Verdejo ( Mar Del Plata, Argentina) to the team this season, the squad is stronger and more prepared for the competition. Returnees for the Patriot ladies include Veronica Sizemore ( Manchester, KY), Nickie Dugger ( Corbin, KY), Ashley Shepherd ( Shelby, OH), Christy Phelps ( Fulton, KY), and Tenille Cann ( Craigieburn, Australia). These ladies have gained much experience from past seasons and will help to lead their team to success.
The 2005-2006 season includes strong competitions from within our conference and region. Lindsey Wilson College, Georgetown College, and Campbellsville University will challenge the Patriots with years of international experience.
Coach Chin Tan stated, “I like my teams to compete against the best and I welcome the challenge.” Coach Tan will strive to make this season a positive experience for the athletes. The athletes will learn and grow from the game while using these experiences to become a better student, person, and citizen.
