University of the Cumberlands Tennis 06-07 Preview

Although the Patriots finished within the top four of the Mid-South Conference last season, Cumberlands tennis looks to continue rebuilding and striving to reach their maximum potential. Retaining several athletes from the starting line-up, the Patriots have an abundance of strong leaders to guide the path to excellence.

The Patriot ladies finished the 2005-2006 season with a 3-2 conference record, placing them third in the Mid-South Conference. Returning members Veronica Sizemore ( Manchester, KY), Nickie Dugger ( Corbin, KY), and Jessica Lowrie ( Williamsburg, KY), possess a wealth of experience and knowledge to share with newcomers to the team. Transfer student, Juliana Negosek (Gape Girardeau, MO), along with freshmen players, Leona Baumgardner (Williamsburg, KY), Haley Farris (Corbin, KY), and Mary Ngiam (Malaysia), look to strengthen the squad and improve upon the team’s finish last season.

Losing several key starters from last season, the men’s team looks to rebuild this season. Returning members Felix Koch (Germany/Indonesia), Robert Porter ( Corbin, KY), Anthony Jang-Yank Un ( Malaysia), and Aaron Ngiam ( Malaysia), will lead newcomers Tyler Maynard ( Louisa, KY), Higor Silva ( Brazil), and David Spaggiari ( Colombia), to reach the team’s full potential. The men must rise above challenges throughout the season to conclude 2007 above their fourth place finish last season.

The Patriots will challenge conference rivals Lindsey Wilson College, Georgetown College, Campbellsville University, and Pikeville College multiple times throughout the season. Other programs, such as Carson Newman College, Centre College, Union College, and Lincoln Memorial University will challenge the Patriots and award them with experiences necessary for building a stronger team.
