University of the Cumberlands Tennis 07-08 Season Review

With 15 new faces gracing the Patriot roster this year, the tennis programs attempted to incorporate the new comers into the team. After a tough season and many rainouts, the women finished with a 6-10 season and the men had a 7-12 conclusion. Both men and women were 3-3 in Mid-South Conference play. The Patriots are led by Coach Chin Tan who just completed his 19 th year as the head coach.

Competing against conference rivals Lindsey Wilson College, Georgetown College, Campbellsville University, Pikeville College, and West Virginia Tech, both teams were able to earn a top three finish in the Mid-South Conference. The Patriots also competed against local programs from Centre College, Eastern Kentucky University, Lincoln Memorial University, Maryville College, Berea College, and Morehead State and Union College.

At the Mid South Conference Tournament, the women earned a first round bye and matched up against Georgetown in the second round. The Lady Tigers were too much for the Patriots to hold off as they dropped the match ending their season. The Patriot men were able to grab a first round win over Pikeville to advance to second round action. Yet again, the Georgetown Tigers halted the Patriots progress and thus ending their season as well.

With such a young team, the Patriots will not lose any seniors to graduation. Key returnees and All-Conference players for the Patriots, David Fei ( Sydney, Australia), Oscar Pantoja ( Colombia), and Mary Ngiam ( Miri, Malaysia) will continue to lead the Patriots during next season. Also, All-Conference Honorable Mention players, Aaron Ngiam (Malaysia), Chris Bright (Danville, KY), Drew Hill (Carlisle, OH), John Hill (Carlisle, KY), Donna Strong (Dwarf, KY), Haley Farris (Corbin, KY), and Kelcey Bauer (Fairfield, OH) will contribute to the Patriots season next year, and as the freshmen have gained needed experience, the Patriots prepare for another season and look to improve on this season’s record.
