University of the Cumberlands Track and Field 03-04 Preview

The University of the Cumberlands Track Team has a different look this year. The Patriots look to be strong in the distance, middle distance, sprints and field events. Young faces will look to get to the national indoor meet in March. Coach Floyd Stroud is very excited about his team this year. "We are strong in every event that we are in. I am very anxious to see how many people will qualify for the national meets."

The women's middle distance squad looks very strong with freshmen Kelly and Shelly Schnee, Shelley Seifert along with sophomore Michelle Warnky will look to qualify in the 3200 meter relay and individual events. LeNita White looks to qualify again the discus after her school record throws in 2003. Freshman Megan Banks threw 140 feet in the discus in high school and looks to be a part of the strong field event team the Patriots have. Freshmen Kristin McKenna and Melissa Story look to qualify for pole vault which would be a first for Cumberland. In the distance events, Barb Davies looks to spring past her school record in the 5000 meter race this year and qualify for the indoor and outdoor championships.

All-Americans Tethlon Detry and Joe Salvato look to make up for the injured 2003 seasons and qualify individually for the championships. Assistant Coach B.J. Temple looks forward to the 2004 season. "Our middle distance squad will be strong for indoor and outdoor. I am excited to see what our freshmen and sophomores can contribute to Cumberland's strong history of middle distance." Senior Jon Brenenstuhl will focus on the 5000 meters indoor and the marathon outdoor. He qualified for the marathon along with senior Tommie Kendall last year at the outdoor national meet. Joe McDaniel will red shirt indoor, but will look to qualify for the 1500 meter race outdoor. Adam Honnold will focus on the 5000 meters indoor and will look to qualify. Lemuel Holifield will contribute in the 400 meter dash and the 1600 meter relays indoors and outdoors. Ronnie Collins, Jared Tackett, Derrick Byrd, and Brent Culbreath will all look to qualify for the national meets.

Cumberlands will travel to Findley, Ohio on the 30th and 31st of January. They will be in Clemson, South Carolina on the 14th of February. The following week the team will be in Knoxville, Tennessee and Bloomington, Indiana. The national meet will take place in Johnson City, Tennessee on the 4th, 5th, and 6th of March. The outdoor championships will take place on the 20th, 21st and 22nd of May in Louisville, KY.
