University of the Cumberlands Volleyball 04-05 Wrap-up

As head coach of the Patriot ladies, Jon Campbell entered into his fourth season and pulled out yet another successful year. In four years of coaching, Campbell has tallied up a record of 106-45, giving him an overall .70 winning percentage. Coach Campbell has certainly brought needed strength and knowledge to the University's volleyball program.

This year’s team showed signs of adversity as they have now lost two of the best volleyball players to ever play at Cumberlands due to graduation; Lisa Van Berkel and Marla Harris. The ladies posted a 28-10 season, which was something to be proud of especially considering all the young talent on the University's team. The sophomore class proved to be the strong hold along with the seniors for this year’s team with players like Liz Bowling tallying 1350 assists, Keri Stallworth adding 44 solo blocks and 135 block assists. Freshman Tara Suttles also showed lots of potential, as the lone freshman on the team who in her first season as a Patriot, was the second leader in kills with 298.

Senior, Marla Harris, was the Patriots main lady this year as she tallied up an outstanding 512 kills, gaining her an average of 3.94 kills per game. She notched 92 assisted blocks and 28 solos. Senior Lisa Van Berkel was also a key contributor to the team as she added an additional 268 kills, an average of 2.02 per game. Van Berkel also tallied up 21 solo blocks and 60 block assists. Both Harris and Van Berkel will be missed next year, because each girl brought a spirit of winning with them each time they set foot on the court and they were both exceptionally strong leaders for all younger players.

The team is looking forward to another successful season next year. The Patriot dream is to win it all and with the right attitude and spirit, next years team may do just that. The Patriot ladies will have several key returnees and Campbell is always looking for new faces to step it up an extra notch.
