University of the Cumberlands Volleyball Wrap-Up 2006

The University of the Cumberlands volleyball team wrapped up their 2006 season with a respectable 22-17 record while attaining many conference awards as they also finished 7th in the region.

Losing a handful of seniors to graduation, Coach Amanda Walton will have to find replacement setters and hitters to fill the gaps if the Patriots are to return to dominance in 2007. Walton has already put together a powerful defensive back row and still has many strong front row hitters. Anna Clemenz racked up 458 defensive digs on the year with Kaylyn Suttles barely trailing with 455. Clemenz also had 43 aces while only having 13 serving errors the entire year. Lauren Taylor led the team in kills with 380 while Taran Johnson followed close behind with 334 and 81 blocks to lead all blockers.

Gaining recognition on the Mid-South Conference first team was Liz Bowling. Second team honorees included: Anna Clemenz, Taran Johnson, and Aslean White. Several ladies were recognized for their work off the court. They were: Jennifer Burke, Rebecca Callis, Lisa Catron, Anna Clemenz, Taran Johnson, Katharina Mueller, Heather Rutherford, Laura Sivado, and Aslean White.

The senior leadership and dominance provided by Liz Bowling and Aslean White did not go unnoticed as they both went over 700 assists for the year with Bowling also getting 251 kills and White having 272 defensive digs.

As new Patriots join the team the leadership and skills pass down to assist each other as it has from years past. “I am very proud of the ladies for their efforts and the skills they have developed over this year. It was trying, but they fought through it and came out with a respectable overall season record,” said Coach Walton. “We had equal skill from each class that contributed to our success.”

The skill level will continue to improve as Walton’s recruits gel with the veterans and the Patriots take it to the nets in 2007 looking for the Mid-South Conference Championship. It is obvious from the growing talent and the continued winning that bigger and better things are ahead for Patriot volleyball.
