University of the Cumberlands 07-08 Season Preview

While some may consider this to be a rebuilding year, the University of the Cumberlands men’s wrestling team aim to make a big statement this season. Head Coach Andy Medders is entering his third season leading the Patriots, after taking home 5th place at the 2007 NAIA National Championship and 3rd place in both 2006 and 2005. With a few years of experience under his belt, Coach Medders is looking forward to this season and has high hopes for his wrestlers.

The Patriots unfortunately lost many valuable team members to graduation. Delrico Choates was the first UC men's wrestler to ever win back-to-back national titles, which he claimed in 2006 and 2007. Choates was also a four-time All-American. Eric Flinchum took home the 2007 national title in the heavy-weight division and was a four-time All-American. Bradley Cooper was also a four-time All-American and claimed the 2nd place spot at the National Tournament twice. Graduates Matthew Reis and Ken Prophete will also be greatly missed.

However, the Patriots are returning some key wrestlers from last year's team. Junior Dustin Center is a two-time All-American and placed 6th at last year's National Tournament. Other valuable returnees that the Patriots will look to for leadership and wins this season include seniors Mikeal Brooks, Earl Waller, and Angelo Price; juniors Marcus Bradbury, Robert Germaine, Grant Hoppel, Tim Mitchem, Robert Nusekabel, and Charles Simmons; and sophomore Damion Stephenson.

Marcelo Castanedo (St. Cloud, FL), Raymond Ellis (Tucker, GA), and William Starks (Woodford, KY) are three freshmen that Coach Medders is hoping can fill some big shoes this year. "We are trying to rebuild what has been lost over these past few years, and I feel like these individuals can represent the team well."

Coach Medders and his coaching staff are looking forward to this coming season. “This program and these guys deserve a national title but they will have to earn it each and every day,” stated Medders.

The men’s wrestling team is set to begin their official season on November 2, 2007 in Williamsburg, KY. They will face both McKendree College and King College.
