University of the Cumberlands Women's Wrestling 06-07 Wrap-up
The Patriot lady wrestlers concluded the season with eleven Collegiate All-Americans, eight top finishers at the FILA Senior National Tournament, and nine qualifiers to compete for a spot on the U.S. World Team.
Earning the status of Collegiate All-American were Jackie Stiles (Corpus Christi, TX), Othella Lucas (San Diego, CA), Alaina Berube (Escanaba, MI), Bethany Harris (Valley Center, CA), Aquilla Hills (Charlotte, NC), Jessica Medina (Pomona, CA), Leann Barney (Austin, TX), Sandy Do (San Diego, CA), Rachel Hubbard (Gig Harbor, WA), Sherolynn Eppinger (Warrensville, OH), and Theresa Fennell (Amarillo, TX).
Placing within the top eight of Senior Nationals were Hills, Barney, Medina, Stiles, Berube, Lucas, Eppinger, and Lauren Knight ( Vallejo, CA).
Olympic-level athletes qualifying for the U.S. World Team Trials, which will be held June 9-10, 2007, were Stiles, Hills, Barney, Medina, Lucas, Hubbard, Eppinger, and Harris. The United States Marines Corps U.S. World Team Trials is the most important event for American wrestlers. This event determines who will represent the United States in the World Championships, which will take place later this year.
Due to the low number of collegiate women’s wrestling programs, the Patriot ladies were forced to compete in several open tournaments, which featured outstanding athletes from around the world. The Patriot ladies held their own against the best the world has to offer. The ladies traveled throughout the United States and Canada defending their position as one of the top women’s wrestling programs in North America.
Losing three starters and nine others to graduation, the program will undergo some major transitions. Top athletes Alaina Berube, Aquilla Hills, and Othella Lucas leave huge spots to fill. However, underclassmen Jackie Stiles, Jessica Medina, Leann Barney, Rachel Hubbard, Sherolynn Eppinger, Bethany Harris, and Tabetha Golt ( Chesapeake, VA) are more than capable of leading the team.
The ladies look toward a rebuilding season during 2007-08. Head Kip Flanik along with Graduate Assistant Toccara Montgomery will lead these ladies to reclaiming the North American title.
