ROAD TRIP!!!

ROAD TRIP!!!

This past weekend my friends, Malcolm Dias and Caleb Ealy, took a little road trip with me to Indiana to watch Andy Mineo in concert.  We left campus at about noon on Friday afternoon after our classes were over. We packed our bags in the car and headed out. The only way we knew where we were going was the map app on my iPhone. Well, needless to say, we are very bad at taking directions! We missed four of the exits we were supposed to take and ended up taking some pretty sketchy back roads.

When we got there it was pouring rain, but that didn’t stop us from having a great time.  Malcolm’s friends were waiting at the door to let us in. We were right on time for the concert.   The rapper band before Andy was just getting started.  They were good too – they even had a squirt gun and sprayed the crowd with it. Well the time had come for Andy Mineo to come on stage. When he walked through the doors the crowd went wild. It was very loud, but very awesome and when he came on stage there wasn’t one still person in the crowd. Everyone was jumping around and singing the songs – it was just an awesome atmosphere to experience.

Sunday came and it was time to depart from our newfound friends at IWU. We said our goodbyes and got in the car and left. The trip back was fun, but sad because we had to leave our new friends behind. I’m sure we will see them again in the future, though! I’m happy to say that it did not take seven hours to get back and we didn’t miss any exits either! When we got back, we unpacked and I got a text that said to come play Frisbee, so I went and played even though I was tired.

I can’t wait for the next road trip! It was a great time to hang out with friends and do something new.

College tips # 1

Hey guys and gals. Hope every thing is going good at your current school and grades are good.  I can’t even believe its been a month! It doesn’t even feel like we have been in school for a month now, it feels like we have only been here for about 2 weeks. Everything is just so smooth here at UC, especially now that we are getting into the groove of things. Most classes have got their first test behind them and now are moving farther and farther into the semester.

Some keys that I have already learned to have success in college is to go to class and not miss as often as can be helped. I understand though, that there are some cases where you have to miss a class! You have to realize that you only have a certain amount of days you can miss each day of the week for a semester, so make sure that you don’t exceed that limit or you will automatically fail the class for the semester. Also, if you miss then you will get behind in class. It isn’t like in high school when you can just come the next day and make up what you missed the last day. It’s hard to miss and stay caught up in class, so just come to class and pay attention and everything should be good.

Another good thing to know about college is to not procrastinate with anything!  Especially when it comes to homework, studying, keeping a clean room, laundry, etc. If you procrastinate in college, it will get you in a lot of trouble – in more ways than one. You will get behind in homework and end up staying up late and having to do it. Then the next day you will be tired in class cause you stayed up late doing homework and studying for that big exam for your class! So get things done the day they are assigned, so you can have plenty of time to have ‘you’ time and just hang out with your friends. Don’t be a procrastinator and try and cram everything the night before class and a test.

These are only some things that I have learned the first month of college and I’m sure that I’ll find many more helpful tips throughout my college experience. I’ll keep you all informed on my findings and will update them in a later edition of the chronicles of Zac Kemp at UC. Study hard, don’t procrastinate, and go to class and you will do just fine in college – but you also have make it here first! I’ll be looking forward to seeing you all next year.

9/11 at UC

This past Tuesday was a great day of morning in the United States of America. At the University of the Cumberlands we honored all the soldiers, men, women, and children who died on that day and have since then died for our country. I’m just so glad that I got a chance to honor the fallen people who died for our country for what they believe in. Although this program served as a convocation credit, it was still an awesome thing for the university to do and I’m glad to know that I go to a school that has chosen to do great things like this.

Old and New families

Sunday was a great day! Caleb and I got up and went to church and I turned in my application to help in the child ministry at my new church in Williamsburg. After church, my mom texted me and told me that we were going out for my poppy and grannies anniversary to celebrate at the Golden Corral. So I drove to London to meet the rest of my family and need less to say I was welcomed with open arms and happy faces. This Is the first time my immediate family had been together since I left for college.

I enjoyed the food very much, but being in my family’s presence was just the best –  because family is where it’s at no matter what. When you come to Cumberlands it’s just so easy to make a new family with the other kids and gain bonds that you will have forever in a lifetime.

New Games!!!

Well, it was another weekend at the University of the Cumberlands. The track team had a road clean-up on Friday and we got to build some team work skills and help the community out. It was awesome.

Then that night we watched Happy Feet – only one of the best penguin movies ever.

After that we got to play this new game called Sardines that I had never played before. Sardines is like reverse hind and go seek. One person hides and every one else tries to find them and when someone finds them they hide with that person and so on and so forth until there is only on person left – hence the name Sardines! Then Saturday the track team had to get up early and go work the 5k race for the Old Fashioned Days in Williamsburg. That night a couple of friends and me went down and checked it out and goofed off a little bit.

For all the incoming freshman and transfer students the University of the Cumberlands is an awesome place to meet new people and to just have a lot of fun and just experience so many new things.

Labor Day Weekend!!!

So last Saturday on September the 3rd, the University of the Cumberlands had their first official UC football game! My friends and I decided to go out and support the Patriots in their game against Belhaven University. The ball game was very fun because I got to hang out with friends and support the Patriots in football and see them excel over the other team – a great first win on the home field! They also had a place to get your face painted to help you show your school spirit and whoever had the most school spirit won a prize.

I went home for the first time this past weekend for Clay County Days. For those of you that doen’t know what Clay County Days are, it is a little festival where they have a local band play, they sell funnel cakes and shaved ice and they have it in the middle of town. Almost every one in Clay County attends it because there is nothing else to do in Clay County. This year me and my friends Caleb, Garrett and Turquoia Johnson, a new friend from Cumberland took out my best friend Duane Jones’ cousin Brandi, who is from Las Vegas to the CC days. We had a ball getting to see her reactions to all that the CC days could bring and her new experiences in Clay County.

Sunday was also a good day. We woke up around  9:30 and went to meet Ezra Anderson and some other people to go to church at Cornerstone Community Church. They had invited us to several church events like  Worship on the Porch (on Wednesdays) and a Labor Day cook out after the service this past Sunday. The hospitality of the churches and UC’s staff is just so admirable. They have only your best interests in mind and aren’t trying to push church on you or anything like that. They just want to see you excel to a higher level and want to help you in any way possible.

This has been another episode in the life of Zac Kemp at the big UC.

First weekend!!! #awesome

Well, the weekend has come and I had survived a whole week without my mommy!  My Thursday classes were very easy this week since I got out of both around 30 minutes earlier than we were supposed to because we only went over the syllabus and were done. Then Friday came and it was the weekend. On Friday, it was a little boring because both my roommate and my other friend went home for the weekend, but it still turned out pretty good since I got invited to play Frisbee and we played for about 2 hours – I was dead.

Then came Saturday and my family came over and visited me and I showed them my dorm room. We also went to the UC volleyball game. Then after that is when the fun began. I got invited to go caving with by my new friend Ezra Anderson and his friends. Now I had never been caving, and didn’t know what to expect and I wasn’t going to go at first, but it was about 3:50 and Ezra texted me and said wear dirty clothes, bring a change of clothes, and a flashlight. So, me being the outgoing person I am, on impulse I said to myself – “Why not, it’s not like I have anything better to do!” Plus you can’t just say “No” to Ezra. So I packed my stuff and went to meet them in front of Archer and after everyone was there and ready, we embarked on our caving adventure.

Our destination was Mt. Vernon, KY, about 30 to 45 minutes from Lexington. We were finally to the entrance of the cave after what seemed like forever drive (due to my anticipation), plus the added excitement since I had never been caving before. Before we got to enter the cave, David and Brett had to go over a few rules to know while caving.

When we got in, the air was chilled compared to the nice August air. The whole experience was very exhilarating, from getting muddy, to crawling through places that were shoulder length apart for me, to scaling a wall which was really sketchy, and then swimming in ice cold water in the cave with about a foot of mud (not including the water) to get to the exit of the cave. As soon as we got back to the cars, I asked when we were going again because it was so just so fun and exhilarating and just an awesome way to make new friends and bond with them on a different level!  Caleb was back on Sunday and we went to church with Ezra and it was a great experience.

That wraps up my first full weekend at the BIG UC!!!

Time flies!

My summer was pretty fun-filled and exciting, except that it was shorter than I may have liked. Hey, who am I to complain? What I did the most during the summer was work with my Poppy in the log woods and train and weight lift for the up and coming track season. I also hung out with as many friends as I possibly could before I left for college. It was sad, but I’m all good because I’m excited and ready for a new experience.

The move-in was pretty smooth.  Getting your stuff in and finding the correct dorm room and getting checked in is easy with the great RA (Resident Assistant) and staff here at the Cumberlands. The move-in is a great and exciting experience for incoming freshmen and transfer students. There are all sorts of mixed emotions, happiness, sadness, being excited, and more bundled up inside, so don’t feel bad or embarrassed to cry.  Just let it all flow through you. I can say from experience, don’t try to push your parents a way as soon as you get here.  Let them help you move in and anything else they want to do because this is just as big of an experience for them as it is you.

Monday was a great way for Welcome Week to start off with an exciting bang. The first of the day we had Insights class that I enjoyed because I got to meet new people. I went the Patriot Party and there was so much stuff to do and it was such a great place to meet and talk to new people. For starters, there was free food and trust me, I’m beginning to see that you are going to want to take advantage of all the free stuff you can because college isn’t cheap. There was also free shaved ice and a band that you were free to dance to and a place to get your picture taken and made into a key chain. The best part of all, it was all free!!!

Now, Tuesday was just as good. We had two Insights classes both two hours long; one at 9:30 and the other at 1:00. It was still ok because of the fun activities we got to participate in during the classes. Today we had a guest speaker, which was very funny, in the Gatliff Chapel. Then we had a paintball party at the band practice field where you could get FREE trucker hats made and also more FREE food. There were also other activities you could partake in such as Frisbee, corn hole, etc.

Well, today was the big day, we had our first day of school at the University of the Cumberlands. It was pretty exhilarating and nerve-wracking all at the same time. All of my teaches seemed to be pretty cool and be looking out for the best interests for the students and wanting to help them out any way possible. I have Precalculus, English  comp 1, and General Biology on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and am really excited to get the year started off right.

Me, Myself and UC

Where do I even begin? I can remember my parents telling me a story about how I was weaned from the pacifier. Well, we lived next to a hill and I kept throwing it over the hill. I continued to do so four or five times and my dad told me that the next time I did it I wasn’t getting it back again! Needless to say I didn’t have a pacifier for the rest of my life. I remember this like it was yesterday…and here I am starting college now!

I’m from the very small community of Clay County, Kentucky, just around a little over a hour away from the University of the Cumberlands. So it’s not too close and it’s also not too far away that I get home sick and can just go home any time I need/want to. A little about me would be that I am a very unique combination of a jock/nerd. What I mean by that is that I’ve been playing three sports since I was around six years old which include football, basketball, and baseball which I traded for track/field in middle school. I’m  doing it still to this day and hopefully for many more to come, Lord willing.

Signing to run track for UC

I say that I am a nerd because I read manga (Japanese books which contain anime that you read from right to left), watch many different anime programs on television, and I love to read! I like anything, and that does include love stories.

Proof that I'm kind of a nerd!

What college you go to is one of the most important decisions you will be making as a young adult. I chose the University of the Cumberlands as my college for the next four years and even more importantly, it is my new home. Every time I’ve been to the university on tour or moving in, no matter what the situation has been, every one campus has been nothing but nice and had only the best intentions for me as a student and more importantly a person (not just a number)! I’m really glad that I chose the University of the Cumberlands as my new home. When UC tries to recruit you as a student, they don’t just do it for their job, they do it because they have your best interests in mind and they really want you to get the best education you could possibly get.

Well, that’s about it for now. I’m really glad to be a Patriot.

GO UC!!!

Getting my scholarship award from UC with my UC Admissions Counselor, Amanda!
