Speech Team Wins Top Honors, Sixteen Awards


Williamsburg, Ky. - The University of the Cumberlands’ speech team placed fourth at the Ruby Krider Speech Tournament held at Murray State University on February 4. Nine squad members traveled to the tournament and received 84 overall points and placed ahead of several schools including Illinois State University, Indiana University, University of Illinois, Morehead State University and Asbury College.

The team received sixteen awards overall, with many individual award winners in novice categories. Jennifer Underdown, a sophomore from Athens, Tenn., was the tournament champion in prose interpretation. She also placed fourth for informative speaking and fourth in duo interpretation with teammate Aaron Leftwich. Freshman Tim Riley, from Georgetown, Ky., was tournament champion in extemporaneous speaking and placed third in informative speaking and fourth in impromptu speaking.

Freshman Jamie Gregory from Elkhart, Ind., received awards for top novice in after diner speaking, third place duo interpretation with Kacie Shantz, fifth place in poetry and fifth place in pentathlon for overall individual competition. Freshman Andy Wolfe of Escondido, Calif., was Top Novice in persuasive speaking, placed second in extemporaneous speaking and placed fifth in impromptu speaking. Kacie Shantz, a sophomore from Stafford, Va., placed third in duo interpretation with Jamie Gregory. Aaron Leftwich, a junior from Clearwater, Fla., placed fourth in duo interpretation with Jennifer Underdown.

Other team members that contributed to the team’s ranking include Sophomore Joe Owens of Hindman, Ky., Sophomore Kelly Mason from Florence, Ky., and Tori Hatcher from Williamsburg, Ky.

University of the Cumberlands, located in Williamsburg, Kentucky, is a private liberal arts college in its 117th year of operation. UC offers four undergraduate degrees in 37 major fields of study, 30 minors and 9 pre-professional programs, as well as online and accelerated, non-traditional programs for adults.
