UC Faculty Member Sara Ash Earns Promotion and Tenure


Williamsburg, Ky. – University of the Cumberlands (UC) professor Dr. Sara Ash has been promoted to professor of Biology and has earned tenure as announced by Dr. Larry Cockrum, Vice-President for Academic Affairs at UC.

Ash graduated from Cumberland College in 1993 with a B.S. in Biology. She continued her education at Texas A&M University to study Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences earning her M.S. in 1995 and her Ph.D. in 2001.

As a graduate teaching assistant at Texas A&M University, Ash was presented the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, in January 2000. Dr. Ash was also designated as the Outstanding Doctoral Student in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences. Ash returned to UC as a faculty member in the fall of 2000.

Dr. Ash is still continuing her ongoing research in the areas of wildlife ecology and behavior with her most recent interest being studying the behavior and ecological impact of feral and urban stray cats.

The requirements for promotion at UC include effective teaching, substantial professional growth and a required number of years of service, among other things. To be tenured, a professor must exhibit evidence of distinction, promise of continued growth and assurance that the faculty will be strengthened far into the future. Tenure is usually given after seven years of full time service at the university, and after having been promoted to Associate Professor.

Located in Williamsburg, KY, University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees in more than 40 major fields of study; nine pre-professional programs; seven graduate degrees, including a doctorate and six master’s degrees; certifications in education; and online programs.
