University of the Cumberlands student Jessica Kelvas presents senior art exhibit

University of the Cumberlands student Jessica Kelvas presents her senior art exhibit at the Williamsburg, Ky. campus on the week of Dec. 5-9. A resident of Putnam Valley, NY, much of Kelvas’ work is done with metal sculpture, such as his piece entitled “This Delicate Balance.”

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. – University of the Cumberlands’ art department hosted a reception for student Jessica Leanne Kelvas in the campus’ J.M. Boswell Art Gallery on Friday, Dec. 9. The reception was held to celebrate Kelvas’ achievements in her senior art exhibit, on display in the Boswell Gallery during the week of Dec. 5-9.

The mediums displayed in Kelvas’ exhibit highlight the diversity in her work, including charcoal, oil on canvas, monoprints, digital compositions and photography and much more. In the center of the exhibit a number of Kelvas’ sculpture work was shown, including several welded metal pieces that she especially favors.

“The things that I find outdoors, or in junk yards, are my favorite items to work with because they feel natural to me,” says Kelvas about the inspiration for her metal work.

Kelvas’s work also reflects another way she is inspired: “Most of my works either relate to images in my dreams and subconscious or have to do with the process with which they are made,” she says.

Upon her December graduation, Kelvas plans to return home to Putnam Valley, New York before starting her grad work. She hopes to continue working in art, specifically sculpture, and also plans to pursue interests in photography and graphic design.

Kelvas is the daughter of Putnam Valley residents Andrew and Patricia Kelvas.
