Cumberlands Student Earns Internship at KY House of Representatives

Williamsburg, Ky. – University of the Cumberlands (UC) senior Eugenia Vickers (Sand Gap, KY) recently received an internship at the Kentucky House of Representatives Republican Caucus. This prestigious honor is awarded to students based on their interest in government, academic standing, letters of recommendation and personal interviews.

As an intern Eugenia is responsible for taking minutes at committee meetings, assisting in responding to constituent concerns, researching proposed legislation, and attending Caucus meetings and House sessions.

“I'm really enjoying my time spent in Frankfort,” said Eugenia. “I’m sure that my inside views of the legislative process will be an invaluable asset to my future educational and career aspirations.”

Vickers decided to apply for the internship opportunity after talking to Richard Wilson, the Intern Coordinator of the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities (AIKCU) when he visited the UC campus. Along with the internship, she is taking two evening seminars on Kentucky Politics & Government and Public Policy which is sponsored by AIKCU.

When talking about the 2012 legislative session Eugenia says, “There are several controversial issues such as redistricting, casino gambling, and the executive budget that will be debated on the House floor. It will be very interesting to experience.”

At UC, Eugenia is a member on the debate team and an active participant in the Spanish and Business Clubs. She is currently working on her double major in Political Science/History and Business Administration. One of the best aspects of her time at UC has been the opportunities that it has provided her. “I really like the faculty-student ratio at the University of the Cumberlands,” says Eugenia. “I think that it's opened the door to a lot of opportunities, including this internship that I wouldn't have gotten at other schools.”

Located in Williamsburg, Ky., University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees more than 40 major fields of study; nine pre-professional programs; seven graduate degrees, including a doctorate and six master’s degrees; certifications in education; and online programs.
