Roy Dowdy Receives Honorary Doctorate from University of the Cumberlands


Williamsburg, Ky. - On Monday, January 16th, University of the Cumberlands (UC) held its annual Founders Day Convocation. The ceremony was used as a time of reflection and remembrance of the University’s heritage as well as a time to remember and pay tribute to the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr.

During the convocation the University, by unanimous vote from the Board of Trustees, awarded the Honorary Doctorate of Law degree to Sara Combs and Roy Dowdy (Orange Park, FL).

“Dr. James Taylor and Trustees, I thank you; thank you sincerely for this humbling consideration and honor you are conferring onto me this day,” said Dowdy.

Dowdy was born in 1935 in Rhine, Georgia. He attended school at DeVry Technical Institute in Chicago, IL in 1953 before deciding to join the United States Air Force in 1955 to further his education in the electronic field. He received top secret clearance and reported to the Pentagon on several activities during the Cold War.

During the convocation event, Dowdy praised UC for its hard work and dedication to being an outstanding University of higher education recollecting the founders of our past.

“My wife and I commend you Dr. Taylor, Trustees, faculty/staff, and student body, past and present for the superb accomplishments being brought in and through the numerous preparations, studies, activities, and works,” exclaimed Dowdy.

Dowdy’s radio career spanned over 30 years with active involvement in management and ownership operations. He is now retired from the communications industry and is currently living in Orange Park, Florida. Along the way, Dowdy says God saw fit that he become involved in churches as a teacher, trustee, and deacon and he gives God all the praise and glory for every area in his life.

Located in Williamsburg, Ky., University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees in more than 40 major fields of study; nine pre-professional programs; seven graduate degrees; including a doctorate and six master’s degrees; certification in education; and online programs.
