Cumberlands Fights Back Against Cancer with Second Annual Relay for Life

Williamsburg, Ky. – On Friday, March 23rd, University of the Cumberlands (UC) will be hosting the Second Annual UC Relay For Life in the O. Wayne Rollins Center starting at 6:00 pm. This event is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society (ACS) which honors the lives of people who have battled cancer.

Last year’s Relay raised over $12,000 with over 350 participants throughout the night along with others that decided to just show up. Teams this year have been piling up to join the cause as the event already has 13 teams signed up to participate including the Men’s Wrestling team, the UC Missions team, and Kleist Hall, to name a few.

Teams and people during the night will be joining in different activities that help raise funds for the battle against cancer as it has touched the lives of so many people in the UC family and community. The most heart touching activity of the night is the lighting of the Luminaries – donations are made in honor of a cancer survivor or in memory of a loved one who has passed away from the disease. Then everyone takes a silent lap around the track after the Luminary has been lit.

The goal of the event is to fight back as a community against cancer. Students, faculty and staff members, and the Whitley County community are highly encouraged to show their support and participate in the Relay. Companies and businesses are encouraged to jump on board as well through the sponsorship of participants to lend support.

Registration for Relay for Life is still open and there is still time to make a difference in the lives of others that have to deal with cancer on regular day by day basis.

For more information you can visit the website to get information on teams and participants and to make donations or buy luminaries for a loved one. You can also email the Relay for Life Director Agnes Brown-Oliphant at or call 606-539-4254.
