Cumberlands Alumni Speak at MBA Graduation Dinner

Williamsburg, Ky. – Prior to graduation, the University of the Cumberlands (UC) Masters of Business Administration (MBA) program held their annual MBA graduation recognition dinner. The guest speakers for the event were business partners that are both UC alumni; George “Boog” Potter (’91 – Knoxville, Tn.) and Alexander Martinez (’96 – Knoxville, Tn).

“It was a pleasure hosting Boog Potter and Mike Martinez on campus recently,” said UC Alumni Director Dave Bergman. “We appreciate their willingness to share their story with UC’s MBA students.”

The theme of their message to the graduates was about “Reinventing Yourself” as you finish up with school and move on into the business profession. The duo shared their business experiences with the MBA students that began during their time together as students at UC on the cheerleading squad.

The two went into business together when they started Varsity Brands, INC in 2005 and were managing Senior Vice-Presidents. Currently Potter works at Current Business Ventures as the President while Martinez worked at MIROBO, LLC as a partner before being named President of All Star Outfitters.

Each decision the two made had a major impact on the company in which they were operating. They stressed to the graduating students to keep trying and to not stop even with failure because failures are what helps one learn and grow to move onto the next business opportunity that presents itself.

“Following nearly two decades since their respective graduations from Cumberlands, we take pride in learning of the business success they have earned through hard work and dedication,” said Bergman. “Both alumni indicated there is risk in every business endeavor but their passion for each venture has pulled them through the hardships, making them wise not to make the same mistake twice.”

After making a visit to campus for the first time in a few years, both proud alumni were pleased with the changes the campus has undergone. They are planning on a return visit with their families in the fall for Homecoming.

Located in Williamsburg, KY, University of the Cumberlands is an institution of regional distinction, which currently offers four undergraduate degrees in more than 40 major fields of study; nine pre-professional programs; seven graduate degrees, including a doctorate and six master’s degrees; certifications in education; and online programs.
