Preston receives honorary degree from Cumberlands


Williamsburg, Ky. – University of the Cumberlands (UC) honored Arthur Preston with an Honorary Doctor of Science degree during the University Recognition Program on Tuesday, December 4th.

Arthur Preston, who was born in Okfuskee County, Oklahoma, attended University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. When his career started, Preston worked for two independent oil/gas companies. However, he decided to establish his primary businesses of Preston Oil Company in The Woodlands, Texas; Presco in The Woodlands, Texas; Presco Energy in Denver, Colorado; and Clearview Energy in Denver, Colorado.

Preston has been actively pursuing energy for over 30 years and got his first ‘oil boom’ at Mt. Gilead, Ohio. He was also responsible for the first oil discovery at Seven Mile Flats, White County, Illinois. He and his 3 brothers began the Preston family oil company in 1970, known as Traverse Oil Company in Michigan, to explore for Nigerian reefs area --- currently the most active oil and gas region in Michigan. After many discoveries in the reefs, Mr. Preston sold Traverse Company and moved back to Texas. He sold his later Michigan discoveries to Apache.

In Texas he started Preston Oil Company and Presco in The Woodlands, Texas. Both companies are still operating. Mr. Preston co-discovered the Deep South Lake Arthur field in 1979 in Southern Louisiana. After drilling over 20 wells he sold that investment to Entervest. His Denver Company, Presco engaged in the drilling of many wells in the Piceance Basin of Colorado and was sold to Noble in 2007. Currently, Mr. Preston is a co-discover of oil and gas on 30,000 acres in Leon County, Texas called The Blakney Horizontal ‘Eagle Ford Play’.

Other projects with which he is associated include helium discovery at Pinto Dome in Arizona the 1960s; assisting in the Fireflood Pilot – Ky Tar Sands in the 1980’s; and geothermal discovery at Rye Patch, Arizona in 2011. Mr. Preston has extensive real estate holdings in the US including shopping centers, apartments, and other commercial properties. In Paris, Kentucky he has a Thoroughbred farm/known as Oxbow Farm and Preston Stables. In addition, he has pursued business opportunities in cattle ranching, fiber optics companies, restaurants and geothermal power general companies.

Mr. Preston’s primary residence is in The Woodlands, Texas where he lives with his child, Cole Preston.
